In the high street we are about 70% down and the street is dead. In the shopping centre we are about 30% a day down but our saving grace is we are opposite a Tesco metro, a Superdrug and a Boots so we are getting a few panic buyers in.
But they are mostly coffee and cakes rather than meals.

Our retail sales are nothing this time of year anyway and retail is small potatoes for us anyway. Our main thing is wholesale and this time of year most of our trade is with customers listing on Amazon - but even these sales are 70% down. I spoke with our Italian man today and they are technically only allowed to leave the house for provisions - although some cafes remain open for a few hours. Everything else is shut. I'm not so much worried about our sales being down, I'm more concerned about our customers who owe us money and may well go bust. At any time of the year we are owed about £70k

And you've had people go bust on you before owing big money haven't you. Feels like one step forward and then three back.

Thankfully not. Although I suppose it would be one way of not having to pay the rent and service charge.

I think you would have to still pay them...….as long as the centre remained trading.

If it goes into administration then payment will be due to the administrators. The likelihood is that Intu will simply offload it, buy it back from the administrators under a new company or have a buyer lined up to buy it off the administrators.

It is strange to see how unpredicted events like this (and to a degree, Brexit if you go back enough years) can hit a small business. You are pottering along quite happily, doing OK and then things completely out of your control cause loads more work, for way less money.

I don't know anything about their portfolio, it maybe that the shopping centres can be saved - I don't know. It's not uncommon for these centres to change hands though. It seems every year or so we have to change a customers address to include a differently named centre.

With only 25 of us on board, and shore leave banned in many countries, it shouldn’t be too bad. The company sent an email out saying that we “have no legal right” to ask to not go to a virus hit country, either by asking to get off the ship before, or refusing to join a ship.

That's nice of them. I was more getting at what would happen if someone was infected, do you have a doctor type person on board? In fact what happens if someone goes nuts? Do you have a gun and a cell and all that sort of thing?

I am the medical Officer on board. No seriously, that’s me. I do a 5 day course every 5 years. No fun anymore, British captains used to have one in their safe. We don’t have cells, unless you count our cabins as cells. When someone goes mad, people usually get stabbed, or are thrown overboard. It happens every now and then. There’s a few seafarers in prison at that one near Haverhill. Forget the name of it.

Highpoint? Myra was in there, it was (or still is) a womens prison I thought. These vessels sound a right laugh, on all seriousness though I think you should have a cell on board, I can imagine all sorts go on.

My lowest point is normally giving out antibiotics to crew that have been whoring ashore. My usual response is “I don’t want to see it, is it dripping? What colour? Are there any sores? Do you have any other problems?”

Unfortunately we don’t have room to have a cell. We just have to barricade a door or a secure a door so it can only be opened one way.
