Overrated Town players 09:26 - Apr 12 with 11144 viewsjudespiveyg

I feel like best and worst Ipswich players are discussed to death on here, so I'd be interested to see which players people thought were generally overrated by our fanbase. This doesn't mean they weren't good but instead that you couldn't understand what all the fuss was about.

I'll start...
Cristophe Berra- Good defender, but was talked up like one of the best in the league even though he could barely complete a five yard pass at times.
Aaron Cresswell- By all means has gone on to prove me wrong. The best crosser of the ball I've ever seen Ipswich have but honestly never blew me away as a defender, always thought Mings was better for us.
Keith Andrews- We've been so starved of midfielders who can score goals that people think Andrews was actually good. He barely even ran. Jonathan Douglas with a good shot.

I survived Ipswich 0-0 Burton

Wickham for me.
Big for his age, bullied the cr*p out of age-group defenders in his youth days.
But never prolific as an adult, very little pace, poor first touch and a questionable fitness record.
His debut was a PR stunt to take the heat off Jim.
Yet still some think of him as the Messiah. One of the few examples of this club cashing in at the right time.

Of the current crop, I would have said Dozzell but there was something in that game against Fleetwood the other week which suggested he could fulfil his potential. That’s the first time I’ve seen him scrap.
We know he’s one of the few capable of creating something but if you keep drifting out of games you’re never going to influence them. That night he looked like he cared.
I know a lot of people laud him but we will only know if he is any good by giving him a run in the side.
But he has to earn that right by not being such a soft touch. At the moment he’s bizarrely a luxury in a bang average midfield and certainly nowhere near a Premier League player as some would believe.
There’s a big difference between signing for a Premier League club and playing for a Premier League club. They can afford to stockpile potential, although that may be about to change.

Wickham only very rarely played with his own age group, he was almost always a couple of years above his age. He was 15 when he was a regular in the U18s and in the first team squad a year later. Think he was rather better than you suggest, even if I'll give you the questionable fitness - and perhaps attitude once he hit the big time - aspect of the post!

He certainly seemed to enjoy the footballer lifestyle rather more than he did actually playing football - there was the summer pool party abroad spraying around expensive champagne with his mates for a start, and I think Keane had a thinly-veiled pop at him from their time at Sunderland.

That's not like Keane, putting a veil on things - even a thin veil.

Maybe I didn’t word that properly. I meant he was a boy in a man’s body. He could dominate at that age and level.
I’m not saying he was rubbish, I just think he was over-rated. He was certainly a good prospect but I don’t think he ever fulfilled that potential or has ever been prolific.
Ask yourself this, looking back now, would you have rather kept Jordan Rhodes or Wickham? For me, only one of those was likely to score enough goals to get us promoted.

If Connor Wickham had stayed at Town, he'd have scored plenty of goals in the Championship if he'd stayed fit.
Plenty of "if onlys" in football though - Rhodes, Marriott etc etc. However, they might have stayed longer at Town than Wickham.
