Overrated Town players 09:26 - Apr 12 with 11171 viewsjudespiveyg

I feel like best and worst Ipswich players are discussed to death on here, so I'd be interested to see which players people thought were generally overrated by our fanbase. This doesn't mean they weren't good but instead that you couldn't understand what all the fuss was about.

I'll start...
Cristophe Berra- Good defender, but was talked up like one of the best in the league even though he could barely complete a five yard pass at times.
Aaron Cresswell- By all means has gone on to prove me wrong. The best crosser of the ball I've ever seen Ipswich have but honestly never blew me away as a defender, always thought Mings was better for us.
Keith Andrews- We've been so starved of midfielders who can score goals that people think Andrews was actually good. He barely even ran. Jonathan Douglas with a good shot.

I survived Ipswich 0-0 Burton

Naylor.

One good game, albeit at Wembley.

Wash your mouth out, Reuser was a god.

Should have been used more, not every player has to run around and track back, some who have greater quality should be allowed to do what they do well and leave the lesser talented players to run around and bit a shift in.

I've said before in a similar thread that reuser was badly over rated. Couldn't beat a man. He's fondly remembered for the playoff goals and one free kick against Bradford.

Noone in the last 30 years or more, at Town, has so consistently put dangerous free kicks on target.

I'd say Garbutt is as good and he's in our rubbish side now!

Jordan Rhodes, I remember the stink when he was sold but he has turned out to be an average to above average championship player at best.

Cole Skuse. Right from the off I couldn’t see what he added to the team. On the plus side, he seems a nice bloke, a good loyal club man, reads the game well. On the down side: No goals in him, with the odd exception poor passer of the ball, can intercept now and again but couldn't tackle a hot dinner, shuts his eyes and turns away when heading a ball, not the bravest - I’ve seen him funk many a challenge, disappears in games. Just a view.

Maybe, but by God, how we could have done with 30 of his 150+ league goals being scored for us.

2009 to 2016 283 appearances. 156 goals.

Do you think we might have made the prem with a goalscorer like that?

Average players don’t have a goal-scoring record like he has in the professional game.

Only 95%? I would say more about 98%.

the bloke that played 95% of career at the top level?

His final season here was average at best. Did nothing at Newcastle. Should have been much better than he turned out to be. That is the point of this thread I think. "Overrated" players.

You don’t play virtually all your career in Prem without being decent.

Titus was prone to the odd rick, but on the whole was a very solid defender.

Paul Goddard - good striker in his day but was well past his best by the time he joined us.

Geraint Williams - great at winning the ball but more often that not did absolutely nothing with it, often giving the ball straight back to the opposition with a sloppy pass.

Phil Whelan - became a bit of a cult hero by scoring in each of his first two games but to be honest he was a bit of a donkey.

See I agree but I avoided mentioning him because I feel like he has a significant number of critics. I was thinking more players who everyone else seemed to agree was good.

I think he was a bit underrated actually, he was so poorly used by Mccarthy, he was played as a target man when he was a decent goal poacher, fairly skilful and was a really nice finisher.

James Norwood - for someone who scored 32 goals in League Two last season, he doesn't half miss one-on-one's with a strange regularity.

Andre Dozzell - remind me what he does again?

Luke Chambers - Can't defend, can't run. Gives away stupid goals by making stupid mistakes.

Which was still a lot better than the player that was bought to replace him.

Carlos Edwards.

A winger who couldn't beat the first man from the 16 yard line who was converted into a full back who still couldn't beat the first man with a cross from the halfway line but was also distinctly suspect defensively into he bargain as well.

In all fairness, the way Keane set us up, we could have had Messi and Shearer(in his peak) up front and we wouldn't have scored goals.

Naylor.

One good game, albeit at Wembley.

That's not right, Naylor had plenty of good games. What surprised me was the effective foil he made for Finidi, you would never have thought that such seemingly disparate characters would work together. Add in that he had the two differing careers at Town with the switch from attack to defence and was a useful squad player for both Burley and Royle. And then there was the one leg shorter than the other saga. And he was not really rated by a lot of supporters back then, arrived in the late 90s team unfancied and with not much expected of him.
