Get over there and vote for Robson or Ramsey. Ferguson looks like winning it. There are some great managers in that list.

I didn't say that you have to win a World Cup to be a great.

" then those who have must be really great ". Obviously just looking for an argument. Not today thank you.

Well yeah, just imagine being a manager that was good enough to win the league with unfancied Ipswich and then a World Cup with an England side that has never even reached another final. Impressive stuff. Really great I'd say.

Yeah I googled it to make sure I wasn't missing some glorious Scotland stint I'd never heard of! Although it's unfair to say he was anything more than a caretaker essentially.

I'm in the "why does there need to be a 1" camp as above. But I'll never give the 90's United side too much credit as they were just the first of a handful to up the ante and turn the Prem into a stagnant arms race. Fergie's best attribute was to change his assistant in my opinion. Whether that's because he fell out with them or not is a different matter.

Interesting point about changing his assistant. Burley did that to finally get us over the line. New ideas and shows some bravery as opposed to the loyal lieutenant who keeps his job so long as they don't upset the applecart.

And there's a massive factual inaccuracy in Sir Alf's entry, which in a way diminishes his greatness.

You disappoint me, I was expecting some great reveal about us being there before in 1313 when it was Division One of the oak sapling cultivation and longbow practice leagues. It was us getting relegated that cost the whole country Bannockburn the following year...

Yeah that's fair but I was meaning more in terms of his United days and one of the reasons his detractors cite, although I rate Wenger far higher, it's rare to see managers stay at a club and do what they did. Even Pep and Jose get slated for the opposite approach.

Although it's not as if United were a step down or there wasn't a well of potential there for him. I'm not sure it's a move that really adds to argument he's the best ever on its own.

Wenger won 3 titles to Ferguson’s 10 from 1996 to 2013, won 2 European cups, won the league 3 times in a row twice.

I don’t see how there’s any comparison, Wenger was a fantastic manager but he never defended a title, his teams were fantastic to watch and maybe at times their level of play was better than United but I personally don’t see them at the same level.

I just think he's a better manager and got more from players in terms of development and the way he set his teams up to get the most out of them. Had he had the sort of depths of wealth and scouting etc. SAF had he'd have made Arsenal even bigger and better.

AW was already playing catch up after all and took out an engrained p1sshead culture to turn Arsenal into the Invincibles. His latter years seem hindered by boardroom stuff and not being able to fend off competitors. I really enjoyed watching his sides more than any other is all.

It's not that I think SAF was crap at all, but he had plenty of misjudged signings and the safety net to get rid and get someone else world class in soon enough that many managers didn't have. I don't think he's the runaway best British manager but certainly up there. I'm more irritated that United "fans" all over the world skew these things every time and always will. It makes the discussion less interesting.

So you weren't saying that you have to win a world cup to be great, but you are saying that those managers that have won a world cup must be better than those that haven't. Glad you cleared that up for me.

Man Utd were a cup side when Fergie took over. Hadn't won the league for 28ish years. Turned them into one of the best sides in Europe and dominated English football. Built 4 different title winning sides, but he didn't win a world cup, so is no way a better manager than SAR. What SAR and SBR did here was amazing. Will never be repeated. Neither will Fergie's at Utd. Shankly and Paisley did amazing at Liverpool, but they didn't win a world cup either. To rate them on world cup wins is just blinkered and I will vote for the person I think did the best, not for who they did it with.

So that makes him the best manager English football has ever seen. You are obviously just trolling. I have no idea why I reply to you, as you generally just talk sh1t.

Ferguson should win it.

It is very hard to make a case against Ferguson I personally think.

The argument of “how many world cups has Ferguson won?” seems a little bit of an illogical idea. An individual’s career shouldn’t be determined by a one of 2 months tournament, as prestigious as the World Cup is surely it has be judged on consistency and longevity?
