New Captain 13:23 - Jun 10 with 7416 viewstrent_blue

It feels like we need to start next season with a fresh start, whilst it seems Lambert is staying, we can change the Captain. Current leaders have been good survants to the club, Skuse & Chambers need to really be focusing on their own performances and getting in the team for me.

This makes me think Downes should be captain, he’s the first name on the team sheet and also gives him a good reason to stay with us and lift two trophy’s! Fingers crossed.

It's vital, there's not a successful team that I can think of that doesn't have multiple leaders on the pitch. Emery & Guardiola have both said in the past that they look to have 5 captains. When you look through our squad you're hard pushed to find a couple. We have to be one of the most meek and passive group I've ever witnessed at Town. Inclined to agree re. Mick's team, but it's still streets ahead of the current crop in terms of leadership with the likes of Berra, Smith, Chambers, Garner, Waghorn, the Hunt brothers etc. Murphy & McGoldrick weren't shouters but they were seasoned and you knew what you were going to get.

Current circumstances aside, if I were in charge it's the 1st thing I would look to fix with this squad. I don't think we lack ability, but we certainly lack b0llocks and direction.

This is exactly why one of the first priorities should be to get in a midfielder who knows the dark arts of this league, apart from Downes our midfield would struggle to tackle it's way out of a wet paper bag, if we can find one who's been a captain as well even better.

Our defence and defensive record last season was plenty good enough for a side chasing promotion. Our issues were further up the pitch where we were failing to create chances and score goals.

Along with our attacking play, our defence still needs improving especially when playing against the better sides when 1 goal can make the difference either end of the pitch.

We had the fifth best defence in the league, despite a couple of random thrashings in which we leaked a quarter of our total goals conceded.

By contrast, our attack was the eleventh best in the division and much further away from the best attacks than our defensive record was from the best defensive sides.

So room to improve both ends of the pitch then.

Not just this but we have a small team - only the 2 centre backs are commanding in the air, Skuse is over 6ft, but it's not really his game.

We could play great football with our young midfielders but we'd still lose to teams like Rotherham (I know not them as they've been promoted) - big physical direct teams unless this is addressed.

Having the fifth best defence in the league isn’t something to shout about when you play a back 5 and then have a defensive mid as well. 7 players defending vs 4 attacking makes it a bit of a irrelevant fact.

Our defence, and general results, was better when we were playing a flat back 4 in the early part of the season as it goes.

Yep. Take Wimbledon game for example. 5 defenders and Skuse in front of 3 central backs. All of that against Wimbledon threat they didn't offer at all.

I think we have proved on this board that be careful what you wish for is a nonsense. Just because some said we were more likely to go down than up if we got rid off Mick doesn't mean it would ever happen and also it was a risk worth taking. As you can clearly see they were wrong and things are miles better now so take your football knowledge, realism and be careful what you wish for and stick it.

Too comfortable for some players. Nice, easy income for them. We'd love to have some characters in our team and their passion on the pitch wouldn't we?

Compared to last season I wasn't that worried about an aerial bombardment or crosses coming in ( part of that was to do with Holy, as we now have a keeper who can take pretty much anything inside his 6 yard box ).

I so get the point about big phyiscal teams, we don't play the officials at all, one of our lot gets clobbered and instead of pilling into the ref demanding he takes action we stand around looking lost hoping we might get a free kick at best. Were far to nice and polite apart from Downes ( well maybe Norwood as well but he seems to want to argue with the ref to get his blood going as soon as he's carded he backs off! )

Stop talking to your mirror.

See yesterdays 'debate' where we both have agreed that further talking about that was pointless. Why are you coming back to this? It's pointless. Keep venerating both of them if you want to.

I will, thanks. Venerating is probably a bit strong though, appreciating would be more accurate and more fitting.
