I see the woman who was told by police to cover up her anti-Johnson T-Shirt... 16:22 - Jul 10 with 3270 viewsSpruceMoose

...has had an apology from the police.

Rightly so too. It seems the instruction to Flynn to cover her T-shirt and the brief detention to give that direction were indeed unlawful. - despite what some were saying on here!

I get both side of the discussion. My personal viewpoint is that if the police had simply said "could you cover the profanity on you t-shirt, as you are away from the rally now" then it would be okay. Even if you think it is an overreaction, the request is not a bad one.

But the big issue for me is the police quoting whatever laws they want to try and apply undue and unreasonable pressure. To threaten her with arrest is a massive breach of power and they should be held to account for it, as they have.

It is part of a wider issue of policing around protests. For example using anti-terrorism laws to limit the scope of protests when we all know protestors aren't terrorists.

I'm with the Dad in 'Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' who quoted & promoted the thinking of Aristotle, which iirc (last read it about 40 years ago!) went along the lines of:-

'It''s better to openly look at, discuss & educate on touchy or difficult subjects, esp with young people, than to cover issues up & keep them secret or forbidden, which may result in bad things becoming attractive, or youngsters getting hold of wrong ends of sticks through private reading'.

Whilst I understand the point, it rather depends on subject and age. Sexualising children at a young age is demonstrably problematic and widely considered a "bad thing" by child welfare experts...

There is also the fundamental point that parents really ought to be able to make these judgments without them being forced by third parties showing no consideration for others.

Seeing the word 'fck' on a shirt (which most children will have been very well aware of anyway, despite their parents' pious protestations...) has very little to do with sexualising children.

If you have beef in that regard, then perhaps a letter to Disney may be of more utility.

It's a public order offence, so the police are duty bound to investigate the incident. Any use of offensive language or speech, including slogans, whilst in public spaces can lead to a criminal conviction. You are free to say or display what you like in your own home, but doing that in a public space is classed as "causing harm, alarm or distress" to other people.

Whilst most people these days have no respect for others, so think it's perfectly ok to do things like this, some people still do believe in being polite and courteous when in public.

If someone isn't intelligent enough to come up with a polite but withering statement, that cuts deeper than just swearing, it's no wonder this country keeps getting 'stupider' as time goes by.

And yet... The police admitted wrongdoing and apologised.

Some people today are upset at completely the wrong thing.

It's not the person wearing the T-Shirt who is making the country stupider. It's the utter cretins who voted to put a racist, bigoted, sexist waste of a ventilator in power knowing full well who he was. In doing so they chose to ignore the actual harm the Conservative government have rained down on (poor not well off) children over the last decade, and instead now recoil in horror that they might have to see the word 'Fúck' on a garment.

Give me a break. They're utterly pathetic.

I'll put it in capitals so you can understand.

"It CAN lead to a criminal offence"

Public disorder offences are at the discretion of the police involved. For example, it's a public order offence to be drunk in public, yet these days you would only get pulled up on it if you were really doing something bad.
The police apologised for their treatment of her because a complaint was made about the whole thing. It doesn't stop it being a possible crime, just like inciting hatred or racism, is a public order offence, not everyone spoken to about it is arrested or charged.
The laws in this country are statutes, just because some are not properly enforced anymore doesn't stop it being wrong.

Edit: My view on the matter was not given, so rein in you neck before you do yourself an injury trying to score internet points for your inflated ego. Some people are just vulgar and abusive, some of us aren't as we believe in being better people.

OK bub. No need to be bitchy about it. I'm guessing you're this week's 'new' poster back to have a good blub about supposed rude people on the internet. I didn't reference your 'view' in my post at all, so calm down, I wasn't talking about you.

Now, regarding your unnecessary comment, putting a word in capitals doesn't change its meaning you know, so I'm not sure what you thought you were doing there. I'd capitalise that for you so you can understand but...

Just move on. Police admitted wrongdoing and apologised. Sorry, I'm not particularly sorry if you don't like that.

Not being "bitchy" at all, just making people aware that it was actually something that was done correctly, that the officers involved chose to apologise to the woman is their prerogative, it's often commonly referred to as "keeping the peace" . The police have enough problems right now, they don't need more people abusing them for doing their job, which on occasion they do do it wrongly themselves.

The reason for the capitals was because you took what I wrote and twisted it to suit your agenda of hate for a politician.

The police didn't admit wrongdoing if you investigated the incident, they apologised for causing the woman undue stress and advised her in the future to wear less inflammatory tshirts as it can potentially lead to her arrest if she repeatedly incites hatred.

That you cannot understand that and support people who incite hatred, speaks volumes as to your true character.

I should have no need, it's quite evident from the way you type and the things you post about and if you don't know about your own personal flaws and strengths that is because you either don't have the intelligence to be deeply introspective or you are aware and just do this to assuage a badly damaged ego.

Yes it's a new account, I've been here for a dozen years or so, I wanted to speak to someone and when I tried logging in I couldn't remember my details and rather than go through the hassle of reactivating my old account, I created a new one, this time I've saved the details so should eliminate that problem in the future.

I have yet to directly insult you, even though you have tried to provoke me into doing so. Personally I find people who play the victim card, as you are seeming to try, a tiresome bore of limited intelligence, who are just trying to push all their deep seated inadequacies onto others so they can feel better about themselves. Maybe you can improve yourself and prove this to be untrue, I'll be waiting in anticipation.

Anyway back to the original point. Police wrong. Police apologise. Police say there's no issue with her wearing the T-Shirt again.

Thankyou, not much effort, insomnia plagues me this night. I wouldn't call it weird, yet I do understand most folks are unable to articulate their thoughts into reasoned and coherent sentences.

Again you are being incorrect, if you investigate the incident, by reading more than one biased article, then you would know the police didn't apologise for speaking to her about it, they apologised for causing any undue stress, they have not said it was ok to wear the tshirt, they advised against it, which isn't quite the same thing as saying there's no issue or saying it's wrong.

I think you need to learn the English language again, it will stop future mistakes over what certain words mean, I understand that younger generations have lost their ability to speak in a coherent and constructive manner, I had just assumed you were of an age that had been properly educated, that is my mistake for assuming you were at a similar level to me, obviously not.

So putting your unhealthy interest in my character aside we can get back to the subject at hand and summarise thus.

The police realised that they were unlawful in their actions, they have apologised for their actions and they have also told her that she won't encounter any issues by wearing the shirt again. Some people won't like this, but those are the facts.

The main points of my post are confirmed by this quote:

“We can confirm that we have apologised to the claimant for any distress that was caused to her by the direction to cover her T-shirt, and we have admitted that this direction was unlawful.”

I think you are doing this deliberately, now.

The police are not allowed to tell people what they can and can't wear. Another example, they are not allowed to tell someone who is walking down the street with no clothes on to cover up.

That is the distinction you are obviously incapable of understanding, the officers were not wrong in speaking to her and at no point have they said it was ok to wear it. They have said they were wrong to tell her to cover up, which is not in their remit as police officers. They can arrest her in the future, but are very unlikely to,because she launched a case against the and if they now do so, she will claim she is being discriminated against.

It does not change the facts, she broke a law(albeit a public offence law), was advised about it, yet during the conversation the police obviously overstepped and told her to " cover up" which isn't in their powers to tell you do, that is what they apologised for and said was wrong, not the fact that what she was doing isn't acceptable.

I really hope you have the intelligence to understand that difference.

Edit: If you wish to understand or learn more. I suggest you read up on a company called FCUK, they were taken to court over the wording, they got away with it because as they rightly argued, it isn't an offensive swear word, it's not their fault that people's minds change it to a swear word, which would make it against the law to wear.
Not that those sort of laws have any bite these days as police are way underfunded and too busy to act on every crime, whether it be something like this or not.

Also, why do you think using twice the amount of words than are necessary to make a simple point makes you sound smarter than you obviously are? Verbosity doesn't equal smarts and has the opposite effect. You're trying too hard.

One last thing, if you're going to insist on writing mini essays for every post how about adding a little more punctuation, maybe at least helping it to be less tedious?

Thanks.

I just took all his talk about intelligence to be a form of projection, I'm not too interested in getting bogged down in all that right now though, so I didn't really address it. I'm glad someone else found it to be in bad taste though. Probably best to just stick to the subject of the article from this point on.

Because he was being deliberately obtuse, he is deliberately reading something that isn't there. So obviously it's a case of intelligence, otherwise he would understand the simple wording structure of each party.

I write lengthy replies due to not wanting what I wish to convey, to be misconstrued, which means writing English as it's meant to be written.

My punctuation is just fine, mostly, as I do make the odd mistake. It isn't my fault you are not able to read sentences that are longer than the "dumbed down" soundbites that media use these days, due to the majority of people having the inability to read and the attention span of goldfish

Edit: I mistook Jeera for Spruce, my apologies and have changed it accordingly.

Um... That was Jeera's first post this evening. I think you're reading something that isn't there yourself.

Here you go, play spot the difference.....

"which she says the instruction to cover her T-shirt and the brief detention to give that direction were unlawful. It apologises for any distress caused and gives an undertaking that “the wearing of the T-shirt alone will not lead to her arrest or any direction to cover it”. - what the lady in question says she was told.

“We can confirm that we have apologised to the claimant for any distress that was caused to her by the direction to cover her T-shirt, and we have admitted that this direction was unlawful.” - what the police said.

Notice the difference between the two, the police have not said they were wrong to speak to her, they said they were wrong to tell her to cover up, which they aren't fashion police, they also apologised for any undue stress over the incident, at no point did they say it was ok to wear, because that again would be wrong for them to say if it ok to wear something or not. This is something so simple that my 11 year old daughter can understand the difference between the two statements, so what's your excuse??

Perhaps you'll be in a less offensive mood tomorrow and can try again then.

I'm not offended, trust me on that. What I have been objecting to the whole time is the wilful distortion of simple facts, designed purely to manipulate those who cannot think for themselves into drawing conclusions that aren't there.
I couldn't care less what people call me or say, what I care more about is people being truthful and accurate, when people start abusing the truth for self promotion or political gain I feel the need to direct things to an informed and sensible viewpoint. Ill informed reactionary people are the biggest bane of society, Boris, Corbyn(now Starmer) are the prime example of what's wrong with this country, each twisting everything just to score points off each other, while screwing over so many people in the process.
