Can I pick your brains please.....I have 15k to spend on a nearly new car. I’m looking at a VW Polo DSG GTI. Do any of you own a car like this? Also looking at Audi A1 S line. Do any of you own a ‘sporty’ little number? Must be automatic too as my left knee is fooked. Any recommendations or thoughts please. Arbarth would be on my list. I think it’s the ‘Competizione’ I would like. More grunt, however my wife hates them and don’t think they have an auto box. |
True, as with anything. Definitely read about the VAG gearboxes though, as mentioned above, check they’ve been serviced at set intervals. What Polo were you looking at? New shape or one before? I had white with sunroof and tartan interior...they look amazing in black though with that red trim on badge, grill etc
I’ve had four Fiat’s now, two being the Abarth 500. First was the 135bhp and then I got the 595 Comp. Perfect amount of performance and more fun than the Polo and Audi...partly because of the exhaust note and size of them. They are marmite though. |  |

Just so you (and others) are aware "S line" means nothing other than "looks different to the standard one". Unless you actually get an S3, it's no quicker than the equivalent engined A3. The "nippy" saloon mentioned here would be just as quick if it weren't an S line |  | | |

If you have 15k to spend, you should spec up a couple of models you like the look of on CarWow and see what offers you get from the dealerships.

Thanks, I think I’ll pass on the Panda 😜 Yes, I do like Audi. My son drives one and raves about it. But I’m still hot on the Polo GTI. Looked at Skodas and Seats, but they are almost as expensive as VWs. I will not have a BMW. Some guy bought a M5 for £5k....he had to spend £7k on a re con gearbox which apparently they fail on all the time. |
I’m sorry but if anyone bought a used M5 for 5k then they got all they deserved, no M car, AMG or RS version of German big 3 should be bought used over 5 years old without a thorough inspection or from an approved specialist used dealer.
The polo is a good fit but it’s not the outright best in class, also consider desirability at re sale as polos are generally first time cars or a commute buggy or older persons transport, they won’t be drawn to the insurance issues and the other associated costs. Don’t rule out a mini, that 3 cylinder 1,5 litre turbo unit is a peach,build quality is suburb now BMW have all their pieces in place, we have one as a second car and it’s probably better value for money than the Audi we had before. Plus they are very desirable for resale and on trend right now. |  | | |

We had been looking at nearly new Mini convertibles with that 1.5 engine in January as our second car but held off. I changed job, in theory a commute on the train, so our second car mattered less. In lockdown I found a 14 year old car with 34k miles up for less than the depreciation when I drove my Volvo XC40 off the forecourt in November. I'm not sure I'd buy that Volvo again now as come this winter I suspect used car prices will have fallen significantly, the current bump being surpressed demand, and I'd pick up something a few years old for 45% less - and hardly be needing to drive it.
Hyundai N30 is worth a look - I'd choose something that wasn't German simply because there are so many of them in the road. The VRS Skoda is good (I almost bought one in 2011 but went A3 cabriolet instead) but you can tell the "perceived quality" difference in places.

I had a new one in 2007 and it was very good indeed. Had it for 3 1/2 years and it felt brand new even when it went back. |  |

Nowadays there are no real quality issues in regards to how the car performs, generally they all do the job they are meant to do, there’s no longer the gulf in costs for maintenance and repairs as most franchised dealers have similar overheads which translate into similar hourly rates, parts still have a variance from brand to brand ironically Hyundai parts are some (not the worst) of the most expensive. By all means buy with your heart if you can absorb the cost later down the line but generally it’s a good idea to use your head with what is always a very expensive purchase. | | | |

Fair few auto Polo GTi’s under £15k on autotrader, low mileage as well, sub-30k. Golf a good shout as well...I was a fan of the last shape Polo as it was more like the original Golf. | |
