The second is the lowest for a club that went up automatically from second place. In 2017-18 that was what Blackburn achieved to go up from second (the highest total). All based on 3 points for a win. Would be interesting to know what our ppg was at January and what it was between then and the end of the season.

Before kick off on 1st January we had 37 points from 22 so 1.6818 After we beat Lincoln on 25th January we had 48 from 27 so then 1.7777 After that we got 4 points from 9 games at 0.4444 per game giving us 52 from 36 overall at 1.4444. I THINK!

After 5 Nov we appear to have had 33 from 15 at 2.2. A run of 5 draws and 3 defeats left us on 38 from 23 at 1.652 10 points from 4 matches in January did appear to get us back on track but 1.778 is only just enough to be probable automatic promotion over the course of the season from the stats above. 4 points from 9 games (7 of those defeats) as well as that previous run of 5 points from 8 show how we lurched from good form to dreadful form and back again. I still maintain we have the squad to perform at near 2 ppg. We just need to get them to do so consistently over the season.

Yes certainly after we won at Rochdale on firework night we were very much on for a pretty comfortable promotion. We had the squad last season to have completed the task which on 5th November looked reasonably simple.

There were, however, some expressing concern at that stage that our points tally was generous compared to our performances if I recall correctly.

Exactly. In the first half of the season I thought it was a good sign (for us and the relative standard of the rest of the league) that we could get wins and points without looking that good. Unfortunately after that we didn't get better and, in fact, became less coherent as a team. While a lot of our rivals kicked on. Hopefully, Lambert has had time to consider where everything went wrong. And hopefully he'll come to the conclusion that it's his (and Hurst's) inability to create a team out of the available players that is the root cause. A proper team lets the strengths of the individuals come through and covers their weaknesses - seems like we've spent the past couple of years doing the opposite.

What I was wondering was why you didn't explain it in the OP.

From early October we got 25 points from our last 25 games... By my maths that is 1ppg. I think it is a challenge for us to reach the promotion ppg numbers. So alternatively perhaps we should be aiming to increase the amount of games we play in a season. How many would we need to play at 1ppg to get promoted?

If we draw about 75 games that should get a play off place and then draw the semi finals and final winning on penalties we maybe need to play about 78 games to get promotion.

It was a teaser. It worked. He got you and I to open the thread. And then contribute to it. Sneaky.
