Garner and Waghorn were not daft, they could see how the Hurst regime was going to be and got out as soon as they could. Hurst did an unbelievable amount of damage in such a short time. I dislike him more than Keane and Jewell. |
That window was the most disastrous in the history of the club and we are still trying to recover from it

The core of the squad was good until we sold those players, replaced them with players of inferior quality, and completely lost morale. My point is I don't believe anybody in the running other than Hurst would not have said to Marcus, I'll sell our best players (Webster, Waghorn for example) and use a chunk of the money to buy a bunch of lower league players. That is me speculating, I agree, but I'm not sure anybody has ever done that to the extent Hurst did here. It should never have been allowed to happen. And he'd have had a small amount of money avaialble to loan to supplement the squad, in the same way we got Chalobah and of course Celina and Lawrence previously. |
The gap between Hurst’s pronouncements in his early interviews (“good squad here...not a question of ripping everything up..add 1 or 2 if possible” etc) and his actions was chasmic. I can only conclude that either he lost his head or the breakdown between him and the squad/staff was so immediate that he decided he had to get as many of his own people/players in around him as possible. Either way, it damaged the club and himself hugely. From hot prospect to yesterday’s news before the clocks had gone back.

It really was wasn't it? It has already set us back three seasons at least including this one we are just embarking on. If all goes well this season we will be almost back to where we were when Hurst hit us and even then the squad would be weaker than it was when he arrived.

I don't think his actions on day 1 of training exactly endeared him to a bunch of footballers who in almost every case were miles better than he ever was. Simply wouldn't have happened with a Lampared, Gerrard or Parker type because they were top players who would have got respect. It's difficult to respect Hurst and Doig when they're stepping up from Shrewsbury and throwing their weight around on day 1.

It even cost us decent money with regards to Bart and Knudsen, both of whom returned from a World Cup to be told they need to sharpen up by a pair of nobodies.

He did a decent job at Derby but had serious money to spend, we wouldn't have even been able to afford some of the loanees he brought in there. Taking them to the play offs was about par given their level of investment. What he could have done here with no money to spend is another matter entirely. Maybe he'd have integrated the yoots and got us playing lovely football, maybe we'd still have massively struggled. |
I think Lampard knew what he was doing when he pulled out of the race here. He spent an awful lot of money at Derby only to match their previous league finish, with less points. Not a bad first stint in management but I would hardly call his Derby tenure a roaring success either to be honest. It was a very different proposition to taking over here. As you say, it might've gone the other way, I can imagine he's empathetic and smart enough to be able to man manage better than Hurst evidently did, and the yoofs would've been absolutely gagging to show him what they could do so it could've worked out well. I can't help but feel he would've done better than Hurst.

Agree he would have done better than Hurst. I'd back half this board to have been able to do a better job than Hurst.
