No crowds on 10:13 - Sep 22 by Herbivore | Surely when they budgeted for the season ahead they did so on the basis there might not be any fans coming into the ground? It seems most clubs have sold season tickets and are offering iFollow for games they can't attend in person, that gives them a fairly big chunk of their regular income. |
How can you budget for next to no revenue when you already have commitments? Season ticket holders won't wait forever to get back into the ground though, they can't just keep paying for nothing

You let contracts run down, offer reduced wages when renewing contracts. I imagine match day staff will have been laid off for now. Yes revenue is greatly reduced but there is ST income, TV money etc. The situation isn't ideal but I can't honestly believe that people think we should be pushing on with allowing thousands of people to go to the footy at a time when we're seeing the start of a second spike.

No crowds on 10:15 - Sep 22 by Herbivore | Not sure we should be basing public health policy on thinking that things aren't really working anyway so we may as well just allow everything. |
And we can’t say one week “go out and have fun”. Then say the next “your being naughty go to your room”

Why not? The government has got a lot wrong, but tightening restrictions and slowing down reopening when cases are increasing is sensible. [Post edited 22 Sep 2020 10:21]

No crowds on 10:11 - Sep 22 by itfcjoe | It needs a lot of thought, but that is all clubs have been doing for months to try and facilitate fans. Did you read the detail put out by the club previously as to how things will go with regards to returning to stadiums as that has a lot of the answers. Stadiums will have to utilise parking, booked spaces, to discourage public transport - bubbles of households who travel and watch together, etc, etc. Where there is a will there is a way. The Colchester chairman made an announcement about iFollow yesterday ( https://www.cu-fc.com/news/2020/september/club-statement/) which basically states that they are making £8k a home game on gate receipts, and would normally make £54k. They have car parks at the ground, could stop public transport to it and could very easily socially distance 3-4k in the stadium. close the concourses and like the ITFC statement have arrival times, and have people depart row by row etc. Businesses have always had to be creative to get around problems that present themselves - but they are not being allowed to be in this industry by the Government and are just being killed |
That's all very much based on grounds where one can drive to the stadium though, as I said, what about the clubs in cities? You can't park at places like Loftus Road or even the new Spurs stadium. Should only certain clubs be allowed fans? That's going to cause even more problems. As I said, it could work I guess we will see. It doesn't seem top priority at the moment but I perhaps would have a different view if ITFC said they were about to go under because of it (which is likely the case for some teams as you've said). All clubs will have different challenges to get over, and will need to find a way to do so - even if it involves ground sharing in more suitable venues if they choose to. I appreciate it isn't top priority for the country, but every industry has challenges, but there are some that seem to be continously shat on rather than worked with by this Govt

Why not? Because opening up stuff was and always will lead to a raising in virus numbers. I have always believed coronavirus is here at least for the next few years if not forever. Our way of life has already dramatically changed and will continue to. However the government has got to own this. They’ve encouraged people to return to some sort of “normal” and spend money. Now they want to stop stop people getting on with life unless they’re spending money. For me it’s easy. Either close stuff down to keep the virus numbers low and expect mass unemployment or open stuff up to keep unemployment down, but realising virus numbers will sore.

The alternative to getting people back in the stadiums is that money has to filter down the pyramid to get them through this season. But as has been said on here before, that won't happen without a trade-off and L1/L2 being compromised in some way. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

It's not as binary as you make out. Trying to get things back to normal will lead to cases massively spiking. Only around 8% of the population has had Covid and the numbers we've had so far left hospitals struggling to cope from late March through to May/June. Many hospitals weren't far off being Covid only due to the number of admissions. If we reopen and just ignore cases rising we will end up with exponential growth and with the NHS being overwhelmed. Given the NHS struggles to cope in a normal winter we can't allow that to happen. The sensible approach is to reopen when cases have fallen and to then apply the brakes when they are rising. Ideally this would be done in a much more targeted way but the local lockdowns have been a farce and the lack of a proper test, track, and trace system has limited our response. People are going to need to get used to this because it's how things will be until we have an effective vaccine.

No crowds on 09:58 - Sep 22 by Chrisd | Judging from Hashtag United’s FA Cup qualifying tie last night, there wasn’t much social distancing going on there. |
