And you are bitter. So that makes us about equal. Move on. It's as good a deal as if we had stayed in the EU with Japan. You love the EU so you should be happy.

Surely the point is we have spent/wasted Billions on brexit, so to come up with the same deal is clearly a vast net loss.

The only Muff in Town.

The deal is pretty much as per the EU with 2 or 3 significant changes IMO which, if utilised correctly, could bring about a good amount more trade with Japan.

1 - GI increase - can't remember what the new number is but we increase it by circa 4 x. this protects British styles and brands in Japan
2 - Agriculture - Malt quota has been increased (we grow a significant percentage of the worlds malt barley/wheat etc) meats and cheese will have a reduced tariff compared to what we have with the EU. I need to do some reading on the quota side of this though as this could make it a sweet deal for all of 10 sales sort of thing.
3 - Tech - I'm not overly savvy with this area but a mate who is the COO of a Crypto firm said that there is way better alignment with Japan allowing for better access to the Japanese market.

I think the main difference between the EU trade deal and ours is that we have to make it work, we can't rely on several member states chipping in to make it work.

"The deal largely preserves the terms under which the U.K. traded with Tokyo as a member of the EU, according to Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs." - https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-10-22/u-k-set-to-sign-japan-trade-d

--------------------

Regarding 2

"The deal allows the UK to use any agricultural quotas left over by the EU. British officials are confident there will be enough space in the quotas to maintain and increase the UK’s food exports to Japan." - https://www.ft.com/content/520d6903-d3ec-48c1-aafa-e354c51878bd

For how long?
Why is the deal tied to the EU?
The purpose was to go out on our own, not have them fill up quotas and then we get the scraps. Seems like a dressed-up negative.

--------------------------------

"Both sides regard the agreement as a potential stepping stone to UK membership of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a regional pact that includes Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Malaysia and other countries around the Pacific Rim." - https://www.ft.com/content/520d6903-d3ec-48c1-aafa-e354c51878bd

"The agreement will also help open the way for the U.K. to join the Comprehensive Trans-Pacific Partnership, Truss added." - https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-10-22/u-k-set-to-sign-japan-trade-d

Seems odd that the UK wanted to go it alone and we are now trying to rush into another Trade partnership.
We are taking back controls, just to give them up to another pact?

-------------------------

Regarding 3

“It’s good news for fintech firms because we’ve removed unnecessary data localization rules,” he said, citing money transfer companies TransferWise Ltd. and Revolut Ltd. as specific beneficiaries. - https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-10-22/u-k-set-to-sign-japan-trade-d

Benefits to companies such as those listed is great to hear. No details given though.

---------------

Japan has also noted that it wants the UK to reach a deal with the EU as it doesn't want it's supply chain damaged. Take this how you want, but if we don't get a deal with the EU and it impacts Japanese companies, don't expect them to stay in the UK forever.

Agreed, unless clear benefits can be demonstrated elsewhere. Striping human rights legislation from our legal system doesn't cut it as alternative progress for me.

This rather blows a huge hole in the claim from brexiteers - that the UK would be able to strike its own deals,

All that has happened is that the UK, after spending a considerable amount of time and money has what it has before.... well almost. As now, the UK will be able to sell certain products to Japan, only after the EU has fulfilled its quota.

Japan has refused to give the UK its own quotas on 15 products previously covered by the EU deal including cheese, tea extracts and bread mixes. Instead, Britain will be able to use any quota left over by the EU. "

'please sir, can I have some more ?'

'yes, when the EU have had their fill'

Yep, but "British officials are confident", so what could possibly go wrong!
