Sorry for the rant, but the government are barstweards part 80345035 13:31 - Nov 5 with 578 viewsThe_Flashing_Smile

Apparently the Congestion Charge was extended to weekends in June, temporarily, in order to pay for a £1.6b bailout due to the pandemic. I, and many other motorists, didn't know this... and I've just been hit for £80 due to driving through central on a Sunday.

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/transport/congestion-charge-weekend-fines-a45190

"Nearly 15,000 Londoners are being hit with £160 congestion charge penalty notices each weekend since the daily toll was extended to Saturdays and Sundays, the Standard can reveal. On average, 7,289 motorists were caught out for every extra day of charging – netting Transport for London over £4 million in the first fortnight..."

Absolute scum. How are they allowed to get away with this? Loads of people complaining on twitter that it was barely publicised (I certainly didn't know). It's like a stealth tax. And at a point when I'm about to be made redundant! Feckers!!!

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I’d say TfL are as much if not more to blame for these - they could have publicised the changes but didn’t.

Not that that means the thread title is wrong.

It was big news when imposed by Central Govt on City Hall, all over national and local news. There are yellow warning notices at entrance to c charge zone.

Trust me I'd be the first to rant if this were not the case.

TfL were solvent to the tune of over £1bn before covid and have been hit with a massive loss of income due to wfh, lockdown and no tourists, yet are still expected to offer these services, even if now reduced. Oh and pay wages to vital front line staff who are expected to carry on working.

Central Govt want to extend c charge to North and South circular and charge ALL vehicles except fully electric. I was looking into buying hybrid but need to wait and see how this one pans out, despite not having charging facility for fully electric.

But then it costs them money to publicise it, and they needed the money for the bailout.

"It insisted it was forced by the Government to extend the congestion charge operation in return for a £1.6 billion bailout in May, a point denied by the Tories."

I mean, they're all scum frankly!

To be fair Dollers, they did make a big announcement about it along with changing the bus lanes to be 24 hours rather than finishing at 7pm.

I do agree they could have perhaps amended the signs or let people off the first offence with a warning letter outlining the new rules.

I've only seen the regular white C on a red circle sign, and didn't see anything on the news about it (I barely ever drive into central so may well have missed it, particularly with the more important news of the pandemic). If I knew, we'd have got the train in (we only went to a free exhibition at the Tate), or paid the £15 charge.

I drove to avoid using public transport because we're being told to avoid it if possible. And then they sting me for £80!

I remember the bus lanes thing, but didn't notice the c-charge extending. As I said above, I may have missed it as I've probably only driven into central 3 times in my life, so wouldn't have registered.

The fact that thousands have been stung the same shows I'm not alone.

I appreciate ignorance isn't an excuse but it's still fecking annoying. As you say, a warning for a first offence would be more appropriate than BANG! £80 please!

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

There are strong rumours that electric won't be exempt for a lot longer either. I'm not sure how I feel about it, I live in that zone and need a car to work, but can see that something does need to be done.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.
