I think the interviewer handled it pretty well.

In Alabama a religious oath is required for office, it does not have to be a Christian oath. Alabama state law therefore forbids atheists and agnostics from office unless they go against their principles and swear on some religious text. This is unconstitutional. Roy Moore tried to enforce this but was shut down. A few states have these archaic laws on the books and in every case they are both unconstitutional and unenforceable as the constitution of The USA strictly forbids any religious test for office which trumps any state laws. Because most people don't care enough, or are too busy with work and their lives to get involved in running things. So it gets delegated to the ambitious, who may not be of the best calibre. It is delightful, until you realise that it makes no difference at all. Half the country would see nothing wrong in his position, and a quarter of them will never see it anyway because Jake Tapper is on CNN.
The depth to which Trumpsim and this kind of outlook has taken a hold of the country is one of the biggest takeaways from this election. The desire for a racist, White Christian authoritarian worldview is far more prevalent and entrenched than many people, including myself, realised. So far 68,670,017 voted to have the country become more like this.
