Gone to the great club house in the sky after a round of 89.

Very sad, he was clearly very unwell during the Masters but I hoped he would be making a recovery. His velvety tones and cheery personality made watching golf a very pleasant and amusing affair.

RIP

His voice and personality belonged with golf much as John Arlott's did with cricket.

I gather he'd been below par for a while.

'Normal for golfing' would be the description I imagine.

Golfing has moved on somewhat, although most clubs would still harbour one or two of the ilk of Alliss.

A fine player in his own right too. Used to love the TV programme 'A round with Allis'.

He made one or two slightly sexist comments, that's all. From what I can remember he said that the players wives at one club were unhappy because they would be forced to join and pay green fees if the club in question began allowing female members. It's worth mentioning that Golf is far less sexist than football, evidenced by the fact that PGA ladies earn a lot more than pro female footballers.

I was at school with a lad who wrote to Jim'll Fix It to ask if he could do a round with Alliss - he did but he was gutted when it was only crazy golf.

One by one, the great sporting commentators of my youth and later years have gone.

Arlott, Johnston, Benaud, Coleman, Moore, Carpenter, McLaren, O'Sullevan, Maskell, Waring, Lowe, Waddell and others I may have forgotten.

All totally inevitable of course, with the passing of time, but as each of these legends leaves us, it's just another reminder of how far away those formative years of sports-viewing have become, now fading inexorably but stll magical memories.

R.I.P Peter and thanks for the memories.

Murray Walker is still going, albeit at 97.

THE voice of golf, end of.

One of his favourite holes (no sniggering at the back Keno) was down here on Clyne Golf Course, overlooking Mumbles and South Gower. His father Percy (a fine golfer himself) was the first pro at the club too in 1920.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

For real oldies Alliss's predecessor as 'the voice of golf', Henry Longhurst was also exceptionally good. Had a very good furniture shop in Bedford too!
