Lambert's tactics..... 13:39 - Dec 11 with 2242 viewsitfcjoe

Talking about the Youth Cup game:

Lambert says academy coaches, such as Adem Atay, who runs the U18s, need to get their sides to play in the same manner as the first team.

“What we’re trying to do is get the kids to be comfortable with the ball, that’s apparent and play the same way as the first team and have the movements,” he said.

“The academy coaches for me, they have to develop what the first team do. I think that’s important for me.

“I watched Adem do a CPD [Continuous Professional Development session] with the kids. Was it 100 per cent the way I wanted it? No, but has he got an idea of it? Yes, he has got an idea of how we want to play.

“Do the kids have an idea, more importantly? Yes, they have an idea how I want them to play.

After we beat Accrington Stanley in January

Q: You definitely got that intensity back today didn't you?

A: We've dominated games before without getting the break. As I said the other day, we had 73 penalty box entries against Bristol Rovers. Today will have probably been the same, but we were clinical this time. That was the difference.

Q: We saw the centre-backs bombing on today...

A: That's what I'm saying, there's a lot of nonsense. Absolute b******s it is. B******s. It really it. You've got to get it our of your head. Systems don't win games, players do. We work on it one week and win 4-1.

Q: So tell us what you worked on for this game...

A: A different way of playing. It's amazing. Players were great. Really, really good.

Q: By a different way of playing, are we talking about the centre-backs getting forwards?

A: You talk about systems, so you tell me. I'll let you explain it. It's your idea, not the public's. You explain to me the way we played.

Q: Three at the back, wing-backs, three in midfield, two up front...

A: We played four in midfield and I played one off the front two. So how did we play? What happened? How did we score?

Q: We've seen two goals from defenders breaking forwards...

A: You don't need to be a genius to work that out do you?

Q: It was a bit like the way Sheffield United play...

A: Listen, if we get anywhere near how Sheffield United play then we're doing alright.

Q: Your defenders created a lot of opportunities today.

A: They did. Woolfy was excellent.

Q: So that's something you've worked on for the first time this week - the two wide centre-backs looking to contribute more in an attacking sense?

A: Yeah. A couple of days.

Q: Does that bear any correlation to what Marcus Evans has been saying about style of play in today's programme?

A: Marcus wanting us to play silky football, is that what he wants? And then we lose games.

Q: Well he's been talking about style of play.

A: Marcus came up with that system did he? The next game Marcus can sit here. For the next game me and Marcus can swap roles. I'll take that every day of the week! I'll take the yachts, the planes, all the holidays and I'll let him sit here. Listen. I guarantee if the football club gets promoted not playing great football he'll be the first one to jump over the moon.

You've got to try and win. You can play silky, silky, silky and lose. The game is about winning. What do you play professional sport for? I was brought up in an era where I had to win. Thank God I had trophies coming out of my ears. I won the biggest things in Europe, the biggest titles. I know what it is to win. I can look back and see a lot of trophies for sure.

How does an experienced manager have such an about turn with philosophy, where now there is only one way of playing, that it is perfect, that every team in the club has to learn this way.....

And when he talks about 72 entries in the box v Bristol Rovers, we are the 4th lowest for entries int he box in the division this season.

The xG tables currently have us as 4th lowest in the league full stop from where I get mine from.

What is it about this style that he thinks is going to almost become a cheat code when/if it clicks? I don't understand how someone who changed formation every single game last year can then become so dogmatic and tied to something else.

It's so strange

It's all a bit odd and, yet again, highlights his insecurity. He can never seem to outright praise someone or a group of players without referring back to some (increasingly arbitrary) standards he apparently expects. Always has to assert himself as the main man.

Thought Klug spoke very well about the youth team players needing to have a holistic understanding of how to play the game so they can come into the first team and not be overawed and know how to play in different situations. Much more sensible than having to learn a rigid, ineffective way of playing.

Evans probably thinks it works for his 'long term vision' to have everyone playing the same exact way as well the div.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

To me that would indicate that Lambert is frustrated because, as you say, he is being told how to do his job by someone who organises conferences for a living.

Don't misunderstand me, I'm no Lambert apologist. But the above is indicative of interference into first team affairs which has left him feeling somewhat backed into a corner. Does make me wonder that if he didn't feel it would end him as a manager, he'd have walked away by now.

And by someone who pays his bloody wage

Absolute con man. Never known anyone so defensive when talking about tactics. Good managers are open and honest about what they're trying to do, just watch any Bielsa interview.

I don’t really care whether he’s consistent or not – very few managers are in interviews or whatever.

But it is interesting reading these transcripts. What stands out for me is:

- The interviewer is basically complimeting PL and inviting him to share his tactical thinking. He interprets this as having a go and becomes aggressive.
- Why have a dig at Adem? I mean, he might not be doing exactly what he wants, but why choose this interview to mention that?
- He then has a go at Marcus Evans. Now, this might be a justified dig at owner meddling, but the length of it and the bitterness...

Is there anyone left for him to criticise?

He just seems to want to have a fight with everybody inside and outside of the club. Umm he was born in Glasgow wasn’t he...

Frankly, if he didn't like it, he should have walked. For all his tough-guy bluster, he's clearly more a Hammond than a Clarkson.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.
