Persisting with 1 up front... 10:54 - Jan 24 with 947 viewspistolpete

... when has this ever worked & what does Lambert see which makes him think this is a great tactic?

A great manager is someone who can react to what is going on on the pitch & change tactics to get the best out of their team & counteract what the opposition is doing.

We must be the easiest team to set up against as we always play the same formation & you can easily predict the team & formation before every single game.

When was the last time we actually played exciting, attacking football?

And with Drinan it's like playing with 0 up front.

It’s becoming increasingly like Evans has laid down the law re: formation and Lambert agreed to go along with it. Perhaps greater control was part of the deal with the infamous 5 year contract. I mean, Lambert can’t actually think it’s working or even that progress is being shown, can he?

I don’t necessarily think we set up in a bad system. It can certainly work with well coached, motivated players. It’s the complete inability or unwillingness to flex from it at all which is so puzzling.

Only really works if your playing counter football, which we rarely do. You also need the midfield breaking with pace, again, which we rarely do :-(

The counter attacking comment is garbage.

There’s no reason why 1 up front can’t work and it does in well coached and managed teams across the world.

It's a misleading term really because if done properly you
can actually attack with more people and your wingers basically become forwards as well but it does depend on your striker being the complete package and we certainly don't have anyone who ticks that box

Agree that playing 1 up front can work in well coached teams with pace, but the worry is that we play ponderous tippy tappy football with this formation giving the opposition plenty of time to set up their defence.

& more worrying is that the one striker Lambert persisted with for most of the match is, in his own words - 'a young lad who has still got much to learn'!

with Norwood, Jackson and Hawkins out, there wasn't much else he could do and what's happened to Simpson, he seemed promising?
