Whilst we all love Warky its easy to forget that him and Mariner both left mid season in a huff because they demanded higher wages. We couldn't compete financially. Lost Robson who may have kept the squad together out of loyalty. Also we got decent crowds but we weren't Liverpool or Man utd etc. We didnt have the appeal for top players. Then we built the Pioneer stand and couldn't pay for any signings.

Look what happened when we tried to go all cosmopolitan after that first successful season in the PL in 2001. When we were one of the top clubs in Div 1 in the 70d and early 80s for many seasons going toe to toe with the likes of Liverpool and playing the likes of Barca on a Tuesday night, football was different back then.

We are and were a small team who overachieved in the Robson years. Man U, Liverpool, etc., have decades of top level football behind them, with multiple trophies at the highest level (unlike us, our European trophy is second tier and our one top league win not built on). A global fan base of many millions resulting in hundreds of millions of pounds of income each year... Need I go on? We were an anomaly at the time and it's looking more of an anomaly as time goes on. Once we weren't at the top table consistently when the money took off, we had no hope of staying up there. Unless things change with the financing models and the way the PL behaves around its closed shop, I don't think we (or even the likes of Norwich who are miles ahead currently) have any hope of consolidating in the top 4/6. But then Leicester... So who knows. Although I suspect that will be short lived. We're a Fulham, a Middlesborough, a Swansea, a Watford at best. We have a chance (not now) of making that jump to a PL/Championship yoyo team, but that's about it.
