Who went to Gay Meadow in 1982 for 5th round FA cup exit ? 05:10 - Feb 11 with 2678 viewsstiff_talking

I have never forgotten the loss which was unthinkable at the time and headline news!
Nowadays we would be surprised If Ipswich actually won at Shrewsbury and Lambert emerged for a presser !

Even Bobby Robson was head in hands that day in 1982!

What is this '5th round' of the FA Cup of which you speak? Cups don't have FIVE rounds do they?

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

I was there. Can remember trying to get out ASAP to avoid embarrassment. The world seemed to have caved in.
If we got a draw now would be viewed as good.
Sad times.

Yup, think we were top of the ,eagle at the time, but the Cup was so highly valued we still wanted it. Liverpool went on an unbelievable run, Butcher had done his nose in the previous round and was out for a stretch, we lost the League Cup semi around this time, but Brazil also bagged 5 against Southampton about then? On way home we pulled into services, Norwich had been at West Brom I think. You can imagine. The police bought one of their injured onto our coach to try and identify a culprit.

I went to one of the three cup matches against them in the early 80s but not 100% certain which one. I remember we lost, so it was either the 82 or 84 game, not the one 81 which was a draw.

I was there that day with my ex brother in law who was Shrewsbury born and bred! What a lousy weekend that was my ears hurt! Was that the tie where Telford's game was postponed and their crew got in at half time and caused a bit of bedlam! ?

I didn't attend on that occasion but I can remember being in Butts Wine Bar in St. Nicholas Street that Sturday evening and 4/5 players came in (who will remain nameless) all smiling, joking and drinking. I couldn't believe they would show their faces after such embarrassment.

I was at the 81 game. Was that the one that Burley got injured and was out for the rest of the season?

Went on a supporters coach which stopped at some services near Midlands and Norwich were playing nearby

A coach of theirs also pulled in

It all went off in the then equivalent of WH Smith’s

After being escorted outside we all had to pee behind the coach, rivers of steam😂. Their lad had a big comedy bandage round his head I seem to remember, but did look in a bad way.

When we played them in 81 in the cup our Special train pulled into Peterborough where it sat for about 20 mins. All of a sudden a train of yellow and green pulled up next to it, they had just been beaten 6 - 0 at Man C. There was no track and no bridge inbetween, there was just one copper on the platform and I swear he smashed his head with the palm of his hands in an "Oh feck" moment.

I was on that train your Lordship(the Ipswich one).

My memory tells me that a load more coppers appeared on that platform pretty swiftly but my memory might not be correct.

I too was on that train - everything went quiet, then a few bottles got thrown.
A lot of shouting and then our train pulled out.

Steve Stretton and his bunch of bandits got on their train.
