Surprised to read that we last to go decimal (with money anyway).

'France and the United States had gone decimal in the 1790s. During the 1960s, a number of Commonwealth countries made the change, such as Australia, New Zealand and South Africa'

Although we had a somewhat half-hearted attempt at decimalisation in the 1800s

The introduction of the florin was our toe in the water to put us on base 10, rather than base 12...although it seems that courage deserted us as the florin didn't replace the Crown, simply served alongside

In 1968 the florin got its just desserts as it was rebranded the 10p as a precursor to decimalisation

Looking back it seems it is a little bizarre we heldout for so long - but then again we have persisted with most of the other imperial units since (whilst slowly giving giving over to the metric system of course)

We are the one nation that has ISO tearing its hair out and have been so for many a year

Perches...poles...furlongs

When I first became a surveyor, some of our kit was calibrated to measure in feet...and tenths of a foot; a kind of metric inch. Frankly bizarre

If they ever try and impose that metric system on sport I will chain myself to a cricket pitch...

I was of an age where at junior school I had to learn pounds, shillings and pence and decimal at the same time. The hardship issue was solved by dossing about. It didn’t end well. I paid later😃

On decimalisation day the first thing I did on the day was head for the newsagents/sweetshop to buy some sherbet lemons to get some ‘new’ change (2p, 1p and half pennies).10p (two shillings or florins) and 5p (one shilling) coins had been around for ages.

One thing I remember was how people were ripped off with the outrageous ‘rounding up’ that took place and people being short changed - especially elderly people.

When measuring lengths, I sometimes still use inches if the gradation is closer than on the millimetres side, or for stuff like wallpaper where precision is not so important.

I tend to measure in metric most of the time, but do find it easier to visualise imperial sizes. 4'. 6', 8' etc I just know what it is and can normally guesstimate it pretty well and close.

I can do that with 1.8M etc, but invariably by mentally converting it to 6' first.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Indeed.
Thruppenny bit worth of sherbet lemons every friday on the way home from school.
Took me ages to get my head around the "new" currency. Was a poor excuse really for ballsing up the 11 plus which was the reason i gave my folks at the time.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Everyone seems to be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Decimalisation.

Personally, I don’t see the point...

I agree sometimes inches are easier, if I measure anything I use the nearest mark on the tape measure whether its feet, inches or meters I do find millimetres a challenge with poor eyesight. must be the same for a lot of people, as tape measure surely would only be made in metric

I never gave an excuse for ballsing up the 11 plus. I got sone marks for putting my name on the paper and there the excitement ended.

Sherbet lemons came out of glass jars. The miserable git used a little shovel and into a paper bag thruppence worth would go. Best munched in a day or two if they were not to weld themselves into one sticky clump. Cola sweets were good too

A tanner would get you a bag of sweets and The Dandy or Beano depending on mood.
