One thing that gets overlooked is our Debt 19:33 - Mar 1 with 5271 viewshype313

New ownership is essential, especially as Evans has given up the ghost, but one of the many benefits is the fact that the £100m debt is going to be wiped out, if nothing else that is a huge positive for our long term prospects.

ME bought that debt for £6m so Aviva now have nothing to do with it.

Actually, when you think about it this makes the situation worse. In that Town have racked up £126million (at least) of debt this century, even if that is not the number on the books. Ipswich are not the only club to burn through money, and there are quite a few worse, but it begs the question once again about what football adds to the economy? And do the benefits that go undocumented add up to what £126million could do for, taking an example, local food banks?

Although he paid £6m it still appears as £32m. At the end of the day the rest of it was Marcus's money and in order to stay in the Championship for as long as we did it needed his £5-£6m a year, actually more than that in order to really compete. Just the financial realities of football at that level.

Phil, am I correct in saying that the new owners are hoping to create links back to a club in America (presume Phoenix Rising) in terms of player transfers etc (I'm sure le2blue said similar to that of the City Group)?

I wonder if we will now tap in to the American market more? Presume players more from USL league rather than the MLS?

It's worth pursuing, it's a huge market and the take up of the game is growing rapidly in the younger generation, especially given parents reluctance to go down the Gridiron route and the recent stories of brain injuries over there.

Interestingly, another place where football is growing at a pace, is New Zealand, for the same reasons as above, can't remember where I read it (might be Athletic) but essentially they were saying that on current trajectory, Football will overtake Rugby as the sport of choice for the youngsters within ten years.

Not heard that but given some of those involved are involved with clubs over there it seems not unreasonable to think there might be some sort of to-ing and fro-ing players-wise, loans for young players etc.

Do you think they will close down the academy as Brentford did?
It costs a lot of money to keep an academy going, one thing I've always admired Evans for, and as every academy knows the number of those who actually make it to the 1st team level is low. Yes you can make a lot of money if you get a good crop but it is an expensive approach to finding a diamond.
For me part of this clubs history / tradition is built on developing our own youngsters but I know a lot of 'new' owners with a short-term view don't see it that way.

Football club owners pay too much in wages, in order to try to be competitive. Some of that flows back into the economy. Yes, the money could be better spent, but the owners are either gamblers hoping to hit the Premier League jackpot or rich men, driven by ego.

Isn't there an after market in player contracts, signing on fees and compensations that goes some way towards paying for academies? And that provides for off balance sheet gains that we can never know. Given Evans' day job in hospitality and training it would surprise me if he had not identified under the counter income streams to make his ownership of Ipswich Town worthwhile.

Not sure it’s being overlooked. I’d say that’s the largest positive out of the many there are. It’s fantastic news. Add the fact that ME is now a silent partner, Lambert has gone and Cook is coming in, I couldn’t be happier!

The debt is irrelevant, we don't pay interest and it was never going to be paid back (unless we were established in the Premier League). It was a sunk cost - the only relevance it might've had was perhaps making Evans feel like he was entitled to a higher price for selling the club.

The key challenge for us is either finding the millions needed each year to run the club, or improving the running of the club / finding a transfer model that works, to the extent that we don't need millions put in each year.

Brentford closed down as they're so close to so many other clubs. I don't see that happening here, think developing players will be a key element of the strategy going forward.

If millions have been put in each year the debt is quite relevant in terms of indication of the burden that the owner is seen to be carrying (and if millions need to continue to be sunk into the business then the debt is relevant as an indicator to those who advance funds to the owner or borrow from the owner as an indicator of the collateral that is appropriate).

I hope not, the money Brentford saved on the academy has obviously help fund a bigger scouting network and they've had some good profits with their approach of buy cheap/sell high after 2 years.

One thing I’m grateful for from ME is his focus on FFP and how he adjusted us from initially high wages down to sustainable wages. This was probably at detriment at times and may have contributed to the Hurst summer exodus and missed signings with players in the building (Boyd etc).

However I’ve always appreciated that we’ve not gone the route of Derby or Sheff Weds in terms of rolling the dice and banking on promotion with big spend.

Phil - do you think this sustainable approach will still be honoured? I’m guessing pension fund investment isn’t quite on the same scale as Chansiri and we won’t go selling our stadium etc like Derby. I just hope any investment we make is still within our legal means!

I also think wage structure can be so vital to player morale so any marquee signings could really cause rifts if existing players don’t have their pay reviewed.
