Is it the players though? 15:23 - Mar 28 with 913 viewsistanblue

I remember towards the end of Lambert's reign fans were saying he needed to be sacked because he was an awful manager who couldn't set the team up properly. The belief was that if a new manager came in they would only have to use the players properly and we would easily be top 6. Now that Cook is also struggling the narrative has shifted to ''the players are awful''. I personally don't believe the players are terrible. FWIW I think the mentality of the whole club (which stems from the owner) is one of comfort and acceptance of not winning football matches. Look at the comments McGoldrick made when he left the club (''no pressure to win'' etc.). That 'losing mentality' and lack of standards is the cause of our downfall. I therefore don't agree with the ''release 'em all'' argument in regards to out of contract players. Get rid of those who are ingratiated in this 'comfort culture' like Chambers, Skuse, Sears etc. and replace them with players who will not accept losing and we'll be alright. However the biggest change needs to come at boardroom level. Evans' negligence and utter lack of ambition has filtered down to the playing staff and he needs to go ASAP if we are to improve in the long-term.

I take issue wit the idea that we would easily be top 6. I don't remember people saying that. Maybe a few but not the mainstream view.

I think we have a talented squad but the culture at the club is toxic. We are so accepting of mediocrity. Lambert also destroyed the confidence of the team. Now we need a good clear out and a fresh start IMO. I still hope we can make the play offs but that seems like more false hope.

Truly impaired.

The club embraces mediocrity and tolerates decline — that is by far the biggest issue and it must be hammered home again and again. To a considerable extent it has infected many of the players passing through. I'd still be expecting far, far more from them though.

even if your analysis is correct that its the boardroom level view that makes the players play the way they do, and its too comfortable for them

Cook doesnt buy into that philosophy.

I also find it incredible that the tune changed almost over night. I think psychologically so many supporters were convinced that it was Paul Lambert's fault and that Paul Cook was an upgrade that now it's starting to look like a Hurstian disaster all again with the football decaying before our eyes and the players all but giving up they cannot accept they were wrong on the managerial situation and have turned their guns on the players who just weeks ago were the best in the league.

The problem, THE problem, is Evans. The rot, lethargy, lack of ambition, decay, the rudderless leadership, lack of planning, direction, etc etc, bloody etc, is down to Evans. Blaming players and/or managers and/or figures like LON is perfect for Evans. It just deflects from the real issue.

Come on J2Blue, don't have a touch of amnesia. We still have comments posted now that suggest this squad should be top 2. There's no doubt we do have some good players, but there's a large sprinkling of players that are L1 and possibly L2 standard. We also have some youngsters coming through that are mainly unproven in the first team, but have high expectations on their shoulders from what they have done with the U23s and in the academy side, which are both different levels of football. I do agree that we need to start again, PC needs players that are going to consistently deliver for him, this lot have had their chance and there's only a handful that I would say have responded to PC's appointment. I agree the ethos needs to change right through the club and that starts with ME. I've still got my fingers crossed he'll see sense and sell up, that can't happen too quickly for me.

If we wanted a quick fix you appoint a manager like Warnock/Allardyce/Pulis

We are trying to turn around the culture, mentality and style of the club - that will take time and Cook will need a full pre-season before we see his team and style - this is still Lambert's team.

ITFC fans gave Lambert great support for a year before losing belief, to turn on Cook already especially with his past record is just very naïve.
