Suffolk Horse not Suffolk Punch? 16:24 - Jun 2 with 937 viewsMullet

Facters will know I suspect as he will remember their evolution, but has anyone ever heard the breed referred to thus? I was at an esteemed National Trust place yesterday and they had a board of most endangered native breeds.

On it they listed it as the Suffolk horse, is that correct and this is some union flag/jack type nonsense?

The correct name is Suffolk Horse but historically became known as the Suffolk Punch although it was also known as the Suffolk Sorrel

Cheers. My great uncles and beyond worked with horses all their lives and I never heard anything but Punch used. Let alone Hoss etc so I did wonder if they knew they should change it to the native name or not.

If I remember correctly (don't quote me) punch is an old English word meaning short and stout, and while the horse always appear tall when I've stood beside them the Suffolk is the smallest draft horse in the world.

I hope the National Trust property was showing whatever slavery connections it has.
