Anyone got any thoughts?.... those players that we never quite got in the door but wish we had.

So far I've got

Gazza, Guillit, Kevin Phillips, George Boyd and Batistuta.

Not sure we were ever close to signing Batistuta really? Think Robson said no to Gazza as a kid and did want to sign Guillit.

Sheepy couldn't get Phillips done and George Boyd of course turned into Paul Taylor, the swing in quality alone warrants his inclusion.

Anyone else that's deserves a mention?

No wishful thinking, only those we were at least close to signing

There was a Belgian we tried to sign when we got promoted in 2000 whose name escapes me, infuriatingly. Also didn’t we try and sign Gudjohnsen from Bolton at a similar time. Danny Murphy was another.

Gert Verhayen was the guy. Also Hasan Kachloul and Claus Jensen around the same time.

I think we were also after Bart Goor, another Belgian around the same time.

Never realised we were in for Rush, unless I did and just forgot. Was it on the back of us playing Chester in the cup?

Remember we were battling with Leeds for Stuart Dallas' signature, now he's in the Premier League with them. Joel Ward and Palace as well

I often wonder how different our history would have been had we signed Kevin Phillips. Quite how we managed to get him in the building and not sign him is quite the feat.

Phillips? Madness on DS’ part. It was known at the time he was a bit special. Oh well.

The worst one was Jennings. We’d have won the league at least once, possibly twice had we got him in.

They’re the two standouts for me.

But if we’d signed Phillips would we have given him the service big man Quinn gave him at Sunderland? If he’d worked out well for us we may not have signed Marcus Stewart. And on we go...

Was Cooper a couple inches short of being a really top keeper?

Wes Hoolihan may have made things a little different in some ways.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Didn't Marcus Stewart say that James Scowcroft was a near perfect foil for him? I reckon Scowie's touch, aerial presence and hold up play would have complimented Philips superbly.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Point of order, we did sign David Johnson instead of Phillips.

I'd add Jonathan Greening to this list. Would have made a big difference in the 2001-02 season

I think Scowie could be a contender for the much-coveted "who was the most underrated player by Ipswich Town fans while they were playing for us" award.

Hindsight has been much kinder to him, and justifiably so.

But there is a lot of competition there

It's Johnson we wouldn't have signed had we got Phillips - we were waiting for the payout on Tony Vaighan's tribunal before we could afford it and then ended up getting a lot more than we thought which meant we could sign Johnno after Phillips had already gone to Sunderland
