Key hire's going forward 15:27 - Jun 3 with 1029 viewshype313

We need to nab the Peterborough scouts, they seem to keep unearthing gems season after season.

Now that Bowden has left or is in the process of doing so, I'm keen to see who we have as our scouting network going forward.

The fact that they were after Kayden Jackson shows that player development more than just scouting.

There are occasional gems to be found but I suspect most of the players we look to sign are ones that are fairly well known, the added value should come from better analysis ahead of any signings and utilisation of those players once signed. Everything I've heard since the takeover suggests we'll be far better at what are now basics of the game.

Bowman was hardly involved in anything after Hurst came in. He was employed by the club but effectively worked for Marcus as a sounding board, and helped Lee with one or two things.

Lambert didn’t like working with him and DB actually fell out with Evans over the Hurst transfer policy - he was one of many saying it would be a disaster to sell the core of the team and replace them with League one players. He was back in favour last January but only when Evans was thinking of moving Lambert on.

Agreed, I'm under no illusion that the new ownership will want to put a lot of emphasis on player recruitment, especially with Ashton at the helm.

I suppose the frustration over the years is partly down to the penny pinching by the Evans stewardship, which by all accounts spread the load so thinly that identifying talent was way below the standard, a club our size should have been doing.

Bowman had permanent deals for Callum Connolly & Cameron Carters-Vickers (think fee and terms were agreed with both) lined up the summer Hurst came in, but Hurst wanted his own players.

Yes we were offered both. Chalobah was one of his. Think it was that Summer that he has Scott Hogan lined up too. Did an excellent job when utilised.

Is that true? F me, Hurst has dropped even further in my mind and I didn't think that possible

It is. All Hurst had to do was say 'yes' and they'd have signed ... but instead wanted his own lot.

As much as he is at times a nob, his podcast is well worth a listen to see how he runs Peterborough - a classic case of being very open because he knows he isn't reinventing the wheel and is confident in what he is doing.

This week he noted that they have made a concious decision to not loan Number 10s, Wingers or Strikers, because that is your 'asset bank'

That's an interesting point and quite the contrast to our policy under McCarthy which saw the likes of Williams, Lawrence, Celina etc. come in on loan. If we go down the current trend of player trading to make profits it's the ones in those positions that are going to make the big bucks.

Scouts without doubt needed, but more so a damn good analytics team to identify players who fit the way Cook want's to play, and are likely to grow value, rather than rely upon a scouts intuition and bias alone.

I watched "Moneyball" for the first time last night, and then read up upon how this is now common place across US sports, and is increasingly being shown to work just as well in football. Liverpool, Brentford, AZ Alkamar, FC Mitjiland to name a few who have used to great effect.

I think we have recruited someone in this space already (I lose track, so much great recruitment is happening off the field), so perfect/brilliant if we have already dipped into this space. As I said, it narrows the targets, and enables the scouts to apply their football nous to better effect.

It's also the case that third tier clubs can't afford loanees as good as Lawrence or Celina, that's why we ended up with Keenan Bennetts. That probably reinforces McAnthony's point I suppose.

Also, there's no point having such a strategy if it does not run across different managers; selling Webster as cheaply as we did a classic example.

Recruitment is a two edged sword

It is not only about identifying players who can develop/improve, but have the set up that then makes that happen.

You can have all the numbers (stats) in the world, but if the player does not have the drive and commitment themselves (Bullard), it won't happen.

Once a player of that mindset and ability has been identified, it is then about convincing them that we have to set up to develop them. Unfortunately, as has been seen, we have not had that running through the club. Lambert spoke of the need to sit round a table and sort things out. His view of what was wrong being based on time at higher level clubs, was dismissed his bragging.

However, clearly the club was not functioning effectively off the pitch. Not producing a decent keeper in over 15 years. Players looking promising at youth level then fading away.

Under Evans we have fallen badly. Watched little clubs like Fleetwood, Accrington and now Morecambe show us how it can and should be done at a far lower budget level. It's going to take time to get the right coaches and set up in place.

Supporters need to understand that this not going to be some overnight success - Evans put us too far behind for that to happen.

Lincoln managed to get Brennan Johnson and Morgan Rogers in so there is serious quality available to be got in L1, but I prefer the Posh route
