It has to be remembered that playing first team football is part of a players development - and also that 3 of the players we have sold from the academy this summer who would have been eligible to fill this gap (Downes, Dozzell and Bishop) have gone to sides wither in the division above us, or a side who finished ahead of us last season in this league.
That's not to say the overhaul was wrong, it was required - but does strike me as letting emotion take control of proper squad building at one point in the process - because it should never have ended up like this |
One issue with such a major rebuild, backed by fresh funding, is it can get a little "kids in a sweet shop". Combined with a desperate need to get promoted out of this division ASAP, there is a great temptation to buy all the best players for a ready-made team. Which is rather what we've done. |  |

Yes, that’s definitely part of the downside with the squad overhaul.
But the last few years have shown that the overall success of the club really is dependent on the success of the first team. Our own talented products haven’t shone or developed particularly well as we’ve slid down the pyramid.
Hopefully if the club does actually get some forward momentum for a change we’ll see talented individuals like Humphreys start to come into a performing side and be able to show their strengths rather than have their weaknesses exposed. |
