Norwood - sell in Jan / Keep to end of season / New contract? 15:35 - Dec 30 with 4011 viewsburnbudgiesburn

Thoughts on this? I can't see him signing a new contract given the way he thinks he's been unfairly treated by some of our fans so what's in our best interests at this time?

There will be lots of interest in January, and despite his contract being out in the summer a fair few clubs may well want to front up a fee of say 100k rather than wait until then. Until his recent appearances i'd have thought a move in January was most likely but is he worth more to us this season keeping him as our player than a nominal fee in January.

The alternative is of course we sell him in January for the fee and bring someone else in. I can't remember too many transfer listed players having a long term future at Ipswich in any case... besides Eric Gates, who seemed permanently transfer listed from about 1982 onwards and he stayed for another 3 years!

He's on big money, I'd be staggered if we take up the option of an extension.

If he stays fit and carries on scoring at his present rate it'll be a no brainer.

If he's back in the Manager's plans and is in form, then we should keep him. Especially if we're playing two up top. Be silly not to.

If, as is alleged, there is a year option, trigger that. He will be useful if in L1 or could be sold in the summer. Or kept for the Championship if things are going well.

Hopefully the off-field antics reduce as he becomes more appreciated on the pitch.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Norwood is our best player ffs! There's a reason teams in the top 6 (e.g. Oxford) are after him because they realise what an asset he is. It's only the absolute cretins and clowns on here that can't handle Norwood's Twitter bantz that refuse to see anything beyond their anti-Norwood agenda. He should be given a new contract immediately. If we sell/release him at the end of the season he WILL score a hatful of goals for a League 1 rival. Mark my words. #KeepNorwood #PlayNorwood

I think with both Norwood and McGoldrick, the key question was about replacements. McGoldrick we had zero plan for what we were going to replace him with.

With Norwood, you'd like to think that we're already working through potential striker options and thinking about who might improve us. I'm sure we can afford Norwood, but that doesn't mean we can afford/find squad space for both him and whoever else we've got in mind as striker.

As I say, if we can as good or better for no more money fine. I doubt we can, though. Time will tell.

He won't be here next season so it's a question of whether we see if we can get anything for him now or whether we keep hold of him as an option in the squad. I'm sure K-Mac will have a decent idea of which option he prefers and I imagine it may be partly dependent on transfer business he might be looking to do.

How can you possibly say he won't be here next season with any degree of certainty? Are you Mystic Meg?

He'll be 32 at the start of next season, he's only managed about 60 appearances in 2 and a half years, he's on big wages for this level, and he carries a lot of baggage. Those are the main reasons I don't see him being here next season. Fans do tend to blow in the wind, a few weeks ago the vast majority wanted him gone in January, 4 appearances and 3 goals later and there's clamour to give him a new contract. My judgement is based on a broader view than the last few games.

There were also some of us a few weeks ago pointing out that whenever he has played in a decent team creating chances he has scored goals. Many of those missed games were due to non-selection rather than unavailability.

I think he will still be here next season and will be an important player for us. However, it isn't actually either of our opinions that count and time will tell.

Out of interest, which strikers would you rather we were looking to replace him with or are you just relying on us being able to identify better at no extra cost?

For me I'd keep him until the end of the season regardless.
He is forming a lovely hard work partnership with Bonne.
I Don't see Bonne being recalled.

I don't really have a list of transfer targets but given Norwood's wages his departure would free up a decent chunk of money to recruit a replacement. I imagine the club will have targets and will be looking at targets younger than Norwood, with scope to improve, and likely to play more often than he has. I hope that's the case anyway.

I am not convinced those players are readily available and any cheaper. If we look at someone like Kieffer Moore or Aaron Drinan we picked them up a long time before they were performing. Maybe there is a club with similar players at a level that they were at when we let them move on willing to let them go. I don't see us being able to sign someone already proven without paying at least as much if not more than Norwood is costing us. Maybe there might be a young Man Utd striker available for loan.

I don't think it's as challenging a task to recruit someone to replace him as you suggest. His wages almost certainly put him in the top 5% of earners at this level but there's no way he's in the top 5% of performers and that alone suggests there will be players performing better than him that would be tempted by the kind of contract Norwood has. His contribution here - 20 odd goals in two and a half years - shouldn't be that tricky to replace with the resources at our disposal. If we can't recruit better with the new ownership and the footballing structure we're putting in place then we're in a bit of trouble.
