Johnson’s get out of jail free card 08:14 - Jan 13 with 1666 views | ElderGrizzly | The inquiry is anything but independent: From an MP this morning: This is the problem with the ‘independent’ inquiry by Sue Gray “The prime minister himself gets to decide if he needs to be investigated under the ministerial code. No one else can make that decision. He can veto Sue’s recommendations”

Johnson’s get out of jail free card on 09:20 - Jan 13 by Mookamoo | He will go before the next General Election. The only question is on whose timescale that will be. The majority of the Tories will want him to take as much flak as possible for the cost of living increases and the energy prices (plus you would assume a new variant of some description) over the next few months and look to move him on in September/October. That will give the new leader a few months to look like they are making things better in the hope they can call a new GE next May. You get the impression Labour don't actually want him to go, but their best chance would to push him to go now so they can have a clear run at the next one with all the price rises due to kick in. Not to mention Northern Ireland and the 'B' word. |
Next GE in theory isn’t until 2024? He will be lucky to make it to February 2022.

A few Conservative political commentators think the time line is Johnson to be gone by the summer to have time for a new leader to be in place for the party conference and then a GE in 2023 (likely reverting back to May or June). I guess some of this will depend on what polling is looking like and how the impacts of Brexit and Covid play out but I'd be amazed if Johnson is still PM at the end of this year.

Can’t see him lasting much after local elections which will presumably be a disaster for his party. Will give his replacement two years to make an impact before GE.

Johnson’s get out of jail free card on 09:13 - Jan 13 by ElderGrizzly | Agree. They’re going to argue on a technicality and find the smallest loophole to say he hasn’t broke the law, but it was misguided etc It then comes down to if he misled the House, as he has previously said there were no parties and he was of course at one of them. |
More on the legal defence here. It’s as slippery as you’d expect
