Just watching RT at the moment to get their side of the story, as others have said it's difficult to know where the truth lies in all this, but their take is that the people (mainly Russian, or wish to be Russian) of those regions are suffering at the hands of the Ukraine government, who are not paying pensions, benefits, etc, water and gas supplies have been cut off.

Seems unlikely that Putin has suddenly become a humanitarian, but is there any truth in this?

None whatsoever. Putin is restoring the USSR. He is taking what he thinks is his. Suck it up and enjoy the ride is basically his message. Putting in puppets, claiming this and that, lies, deceit, false flags, all that jazz is the oldest trick in the book.

The borders of Ukraine were agreed by Russia. They are now ignoring that and are slicing and dicing it. The Germans were ‘returning fire’ at Gleiwitz in 1939 after a Polish attack and Polish atrocities. All fiction using prisoners in Polish uniforms. Same story, different players.

NATO is 99% US and Biden has already showed his hand. He handed over Ukraine, basically. As long as his nap isn’t disturbed, alls well. America has turned inwards. Next will come the rest of Ukraine, followed by the Baltic states. All swallowed up. These are not countries in Putinworld. Why should America care?

What’s that useless bag of lies and gas Johnson going to do? Crack one off? The U.K. and the EU don’t matter a jot. Macron: the new Napoleon he really isn’t. He’s nothing, which is why he was at the other end of a very long table on a cushion. Maybe the German bloke can bend the knee a little more and beg a little harder. He needn’t worry, he’ll get his gas and oil. At a price.

Funny how the Olympics ended yesterday and Putin was no 1 guest just before they started isn’t it. All so predictable and sadly so is the response. It’ll be as devastating as post Crimea, Salisbury poisonings and all the other Russian stuff. Hot air, rage and lets forget it. Putin knows that.

The world is no safer, but it’s no more dangerous either, unless you are Ukrainian. Poor poor people. All they wanted was their own country. Was that too much to ask? Sadly it was.

If nothing else, this whole saga proves CiL is gone for good. I hope he she just got reasigned / bored with twtd rather than anything else. It would have been interesting / infuriating to get CiLs take on this though.

Possibly she's gone to the FT comments given the number of people operating out of St Petersburg on there.

Russia annexing the Baltic states would be a different scale of things, given that they are in the European Union and Ukraine is not.

Although if you extended that argument then the United Kingdom is now in more danger of Russian invasion than Estonia.

There again, there are a few Russians already in place in Kensington and Chelsea...

Just reading this article so feels like an appropriate place to add it:

Also, Oliver Bullough's Moneyland, which it mentions, is depressingly excellent:

I think they’ll start their invasion from Stamford Bridge, once Roman gets his passport. The buildings are far too valuable to kick off from Kensington.

I hope you are right. You probably are and I’m just speculating, but sheer geography says the Baltic States could be ‘taken under protection’ by the USSR after a few made up atrocities with ease sooner rather than later.

I don’t think the EU counts for anything. As for NATO, EU President Macron himself said in 2019 ‘they can no longer rely on America to defend NATO allies. “What we are currently experiencing is the brain death of NATO,” Mr Macron declared in an interview with The Economist. Europe stands on “the edge of a precipice”, he said. He was right.

Putin is not daft. He’ll have heard Macron, he’ll know what Biden is and will take any opportunity while it’s there.

Although I expect that anything Putin heard from Macron in 2019 he had already figured out for himself.

The strength of a European Union response to threats from Russia with regard to Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia (or Poland, the Slovak and Czech republics, Bulgaria and Romania for that matter) is difficult to gauge. I would imagine that the Finns would not be slow to pull Russia's pants down (again) and it would be interesting (if it was a thought experiment only) to see if there was a change in tack from Scholz, Germany has already 'pushed the envelope' in re-militarisation but the new Chancellor is from a different background to Merkel (he is from Hamburg for a start, whereas she had the experience of growing up in East Germany).

I agree re Finland. They didn’t mess about when Stalin went for easy pickings in 1939. Left the Russians with well over 300k casualties. Not that Stalin cared.

Macron's comments in 2019 specifically related to Trump's isolationism and threats to withdraw from NATO over the funding dispute. Biden does not subscribe to those.

The Winter War was a somewhat different scenario. The Soviet army in 1939 was weak, following two decades of revolutionary turmoil and with the officer corps (particularly at senior level) decimated by Stalin's purges. Their tactical doctrine was very poor, expecting to roll over the Finns by weight of numbers alone.

Altho there were similarities also. Finland had split away from the Russian Empire as it collapsed in 1917-18, with the nationalists subsequently winning a civil war over communist and pro-Soviet elements. So, as with Poland in 1919-20, Moscow felt they were "reclaiming" territory, not making new conquests.

If he tries to have a bash at Poland I think he will be met with a bit of proper force from the west.

Yes, has to be. As a NATO member, all others have to come to their defence. Same with the Baltic States.

I could see Finland and Sweden joining up now, too.

Does make you wonder why Russia has to engage in all this lebensraum when climate change should be making the land within their nation state as it stands more productive...
