Watching it play out on Aljazerra Putin is still rambling on. Meanwhile our new media are more interested in Boris. He is now talking about Ukraine planning to build its own nuclear weapons, and .Russia cannot allow that to happen. Seems clear he intends to invade. [Post edited 21 Feb 2022 19:17]

Given that the FSB murdered 300 people as a pretence to attack Chechnya in 1999 that’s not Impossible. I did see someone suggest that those buses off refugees could be used in the same way at the end of last week.

They probably won't fight within the existing separatist zones (no government troops there anyway). But if they try to expand those, then shooting is very likely. Airborne troops are very vulnerable in transit and when they first land. I'm fairly sure someone might tip Kiev off if they saw that was about to happen. [Post edited 21 Feb 2022 19:19]

Seems that way but it is how the Russian people see it that matters. Guess they will be thinking Russia is being forced to react and should invade.

Sounds like Putin has lost the plot, or disappeared down a rabbit hole of his own hype. Seemingly denying Ukraine the right to statehood??

I can't quite fathom is this despot 101 "pretend you're crazier" to get concessions or is there a shift in the domestic audience that he needs to play the strongman quite so much?

The strongman routine plays well with Russians (due to history), but this is OTT.

I don't pretend to know a great deal about Russia but I do know there's a modern side to it, people who are happy to embrace Western culture as much as their own. We seem to get an impression they're all Siberian wearing animal furs hunted in person drinking Vodka and pining for the old days. Where are they though, too afraid to speak out I guess? How a place that size can be so controlled like this.

Decades of corruption, fearmongering, nationalism and media collusion feeding into the culture. Same as us.

There are, of course, cosmopolitan parts of Russian society. But also a lot of rural or industrial very conservative bits. Reinforced by an Orthodox Church which preaches that Russians are God's specially chosen people. And a lot of fierce patriotism.

I know it's off topic but have you seen Garage People? A real array of people in the Russian Arctic and the small town-like set up of garages and the various activities they're used for. It's like a world separate from the world. Fascinating stuff.

i've been assuming that the outcome of all this will be russian occupation of the separatist zones. putin claims a victory, the west is split over whether it's worth serious sanctions and he maintains a permanent threat of going further. i struggle to believe that a full invasion of ukraine is in his interest. it's brinksmanship without full out war.

After the election in 2011 where Putin became President again, having been Prime Minister under Medvedev, there were massive protests in Moscow and other cities. Putin clearly determined that that could not happen again and instituted tighter control of both elections and independent media. Currently the regime are looking enviously at China’s control of the internet it seems. Put all that together with ever-increasing repression of NGOs, particularly rights organisations, and you have a state where the views of a small cabal of old men dominate. They may even think that what matters to them matters to all of Russia but mostly it’s just greed, power and the imagined greatness of the nation. I don’t think young Russians living in larger cities want to go back to Soviet-style isolation where an elite creams off the nation’s wealth.

Breaking News Putin making a national address to the people in next 30 minutes. on 18:47 - Feb 21 by Trequartista | I don't know why we keep hearing that he's going to march into Kiev, there are 2 regions in the east of Ukraine that are de facto Russian controlled. He's just going to take them like he took Crimea surely? |
They have given out Russian passports to 10's thousands of people in those areas I am guessing on the premise it gives more weight for him to roll in and say he is protecting his own citizens.

I struggle to see how an invasion of the whole of Ukraine would be in his interest, either. Which has, up to this point, made me think it wasn't going to happen. But that rhetoric earlier was alarmingly wild, plus he's pushed the button on the breakaway zones much earlier and more aggressively than I expected. Perhaps he's been forced to this extreme when they didn't fall into his lap like Crimea and the international reaction has been much stronger than over the Georgian conflict.

If there's a chance of grabbing the whole country, or imposing regime change at the point of a gun, he will. Putin is an old Cold Warrior who'd very much like things to be back how they were in 1988. Or 1888, if he can nab Finland and most of Poland as well. |
If he tries to have a bash at Poland I think he will be met with a bit of proper force from the west.

Just watching RT at the moment to get their side of the story, as others have said it's difficult to know where the truth lies in all this, but their take is that the people (mainly Russian, or wish to be Russian) of those regions are suffering at the hands of the Ukraine government, who are not paying pensions, benefits, etc, water and gas supplies have been cut off. Seems unlikely that Putin has suddenly become a humanitarian, but is there any truth in this?

The gas supplies come from Russia into Ukraine, so that's where any interruption will be. The earliest stages of this dispute, nearly a decade ago now, were about how much the latter were paying for the gas coming across the border. The Kiev government are not in a position to pay anything in the rebel breakaway zones, because they don't have any authority there. The separatists run those places, under the auspices of Moscow.
