It's academic now but.... 10:39 - Mar 21 with 2976 viewsheavyweight

It's a shame that Mckenna and team did not get to work with Downes, Bishop and Dozzell, even Folami & Drinan.

I always prefer to see players come through the ranks and I hope next season sees the introduction of Baggott, but there does not to seem to be too many others that are close. Dobra and El Miz maybe ?

Bishop more than Dozzell, I think. Bishop came up as an attacking, box-to-box midfielder, losing pace and stamina is a killer for that.

Dozzell's a deep-lying playmaker. I'm not sure his injury cost him much in terms of physicality. They also tend to develop a bit later anyway.

That is true, though surely its not hard to conclude that Doz never looks the same for us after that injury. Maybe it was the system we fell in to under Cook - either way, I don't think we would have benefitted from having him in L1 as it seems mostly about circumventing sh*thousery rather than outmatching teams technically.

I dunno about "never looked the same". We saw him start a grand total of 7 league games before his injury. 2 were end-of-season dead rubbers, 2 more he got hooked at half time in bad defeats, the 7th he went off injured in.

I think there was probably a fair bit of players-get-better-the-longer-they're-injured syndrome going on in terms of the expectations people had of him.

I honestly think he'd have thrived in this team. We're built around through balls from deep, progressive passes between the lines, crisp passes out to the wing backs. All things he's good at. Morsy-Dozzell would've complimented each other superbly.

The other thing with Bishop is that when he broke through he was plying in a functional team and management set-up.

Dozzell played most of his football for us under Hurst and Lambert before being blamed for Cook's failures and ushered out. I do wonder how he'd have fared with some proper coaching, motivation and structure around him.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Villa want Kalvin Phillips for £60m, and Leeds see Downes as a potential replacement

Gutting about Downes really, imagine him and Morsy in the middle in league 1

The only Muff in Town.

I'm not convinced.

Excluding Downes, who I think is a really good footballer, I am not sure any of the others make a matchday 18 these days.

I watched Dozzell the other day against Nott Forest, he was very poor, looked ponderous and slow around the pitch. Look quite poor really.

Downes was the pick of the bunch and he was the only one that really didn’t want to be here.

I agree regarding Dozzell. He really has not kicked on and looks like he was living off his Dad’s reputation.

QPR signed him for £1m, I assume their hierarchy valued his Dad’s name highly too?

I’ve no idea. But he’s not really the player we hoped he would be. Unless you disagree?

If a player doesn't want to be here like Downes, and they made that so clear, I have no issue with them moving on as long as the deal is right for everybody, and it seems like the Downes deal was.

Surprised by Dobra season, but the boy is still just 20, he has time on his side and we have seen flashes a quality from him.

I'm not particularly a fan of the way Dozzell plays the game, good passing ability, but always a bit slow and lethargic for me - he wouldn't suit a KM style of play, he doesn't have that energy.

El Mizouni is the one I expect KM to get hold of and work with. Everybody talks about his brilliant attitude to learn. He's all energy, good quality and just 21 years old I think will have a really good future with Town.

Anticipate we will see more of El Mizouni next year than this one though.

Agreed related to El Mizouni. I think he's injured now, add more tempo to the midfield than Captain slow Carroll.

Dobra should be recalled and put under the wings of McKenna. There is a nice little player in there somewhere, just needs to be carefully nurtured.
