Alan Brazil in the fanzone today 19:07 - Mar 26 with 7359 views | GlasgowBlue | Quite an amazing recovery in less than 24 hours. Although I understand why he is wearing the shades. He must have felt like sh1t this morning but he loved Mariner and there is no way he would have missed this.

Oh yeah, for sure. I don’t think Parlour’s in a good place either and it’s a shame he’s encouraging Brazil.

He says he isn't and I believe him. He enjoys a good drink. Doesn't make him an alcoholic. [Post edited 26 Mar 2022 19:48]

I’d think I was an alcoholic if I got into the same states he does and as regularly as he does. Maybe taking his word isn’t the the best guide either. And then there’s the physical evidence. I think we’re talking very fine margins if he isn’t. Not that I or any of us know for sure of course.

So what anyway and whose business is it. Many people are alcoholics, borderline alcoholics and or functioning alcoholics. Many also just like a drink, drink a lot and decide they like the whole social aspect that goes with it. Some can handle it and some can't. Either way it's no one else's business. Good on ya Alan. Exactly this innit. The problem these days is that if you acknowledge you're an alcoholic in some shape or form, even if you function fine most of the time, there's a stigma and assumption you should never drink a drop again. Sure, some people just can't function at all and are total liabilities to their families and themselves, but most aren't like that. I don't care what labels you use.

The “so what” is that I’d quite like him not to kill himself through drink. Nothing more. If he wants to, that’s none of my business. Just a shame/waste.

You’re probably right about the stigma, and that’s a real shame. I think it takes a lot more balls to admit you’ve got a problem and ask for help, rather than denying it (to both yourself and others). A functioning alcoholic isn’t a good place to be at all. And that’s speaking from a perspective of knowing I drink way too much too often.

I don't agree Swanners, per se. "Functioning alcoholic" or "massive boozer" or "pisshead" or "bon viveur" or "heavy drinker" or "big drinker" or "social boozer" or... etc. It depends on the person. I don't argue that excessive drinking is fairly objective in terms of one's physical health. However, addiction is addiction and I know and have known plenty of people who are addicted to alcohol who have to stop, and people who drink ridiculously (and with great physical damage) but are not addicted to alcohol in the same sense. I'm only kind of a doctor, mind :)

Fair enough. He’s only just turned 60 and looks a state. He could have another 20 very active years if he looked after himself. I know people who are still competing in the Iron Man world champs in Hawaii in their 80s (granted that’s rare!). Alan looks like he’d struggle to get to the bar. I don’t like saying this, as he’s one of our legends, but if I end up in his shape in a decade’s time I’d be gutted. I think people’s blue goggles are getting in the way here. But then maybe he represents the norm now, and I’m out of touch.

I just look at him and think ‘that can’t be good’. But maybe he’ll defy all the odds and his heart can handle the stress. He did have a big heart after all.
