Putney 21:34 - Mar 27 with 3071 viewsCoastalblue

I don't really remember him particularly, though I must have seen him play dozens of games for us. Looking through some stuff he won suporters player of the year in '84 in a side which included Wark, Mariner, Butcher, Osman.

Was he that good?

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

All that crop that came through were downgrades on what went before:
Kevin Steggles
Tommy Parkin
Irvin Gernon
Trevor Putney
Ian Cranson
Frank Yallop
Mich D’Avray
David Barnes
Michael Cole
Even Mick Stockwell… he was no Mick Mills or George Burley.

Agree with all that - just that posters saying he wasn't any good need to place him in that very context i.e. no he wasn't a top Division 1 star (though he did finish 4th for Norwich and also Middlesborough paid a tidy sum for him), But Putney and Cranson, Yallop, Brennan, Stockwell, Zondervan and even good old Mich would walk into our current side, notwithstanding that, by current lights, Walton, Burns, Celina etc can all be termed "good".

I remember that game at Old Trafford in the 80’s. We went up there needing to win to stay up. We won. Trevor was fantastic for us that day, driving us on in midfield. Never realised his full potential due to injuries, but he was such an all action give it everything player, injuries were inevitable.

The nearest player in recent years I’d compare ‘Trevor Chuntney’ to would probably be Paul Anderson under McM. Hard working, all action, versatile, but was never rarely going to be your match winner and a ‘great’! From memory he was reasonably popular as he always gave 100% and never tried to be too flash! Think the year he win POTY was our first where we were starting to struggle at wrong end of the table (admit it was top League). As other replies have stated, his blond hair and slightly unusual name I think meant he is remembered more than some others of his type & level!

Our greats from the Robson era where either on the wain or looking like moving on as the team struggled, think fans initially thought the likes of Putney, Cranson, D’Avrey & Brennan were the next ITFC golden generation, however in reality, although good solid players they were a slight downgrade on their predecessors, along with Bobby Ferguson not really being another Robson! Basically we started to find our natural level again, however perhaps I’m being a bit unfair on Ferguson as we pretty skint and he didn’t have as long as Robson to build a team over several years!

Was at that game, still the last time Utd were leading at Old Trafford at Half Time but went on to lose! It was pretty unbelievable tbh….even then, UTd fans weren’t happy with us outside after!!!!!

If I remember rightly Putney was quoted in the local press as saying he did so much running that day he could not physically walk the next day.

I’ve always had a soft spot for him as it’s was him and Irvin Gernon that presented me my blue super skills badge at the Willis Faber sports club ... think it’s ipswich school sports ground now ? Behind what’s now the town training ground ... was it cranes or GRE there originally ? Anyway it was supposed to be frans thijssen but I guess he was being sold and those 2 equaled one ageing frans ... I think he was born in Brentwood (Putney) and on trips out of Suffolk to the west would constantly mention this when the family trip stopped at the post house for a wee stop .

Poll: Is it an issue for you that the new England manager is foreign ?

“those 2 equaled one ageing frans ...“

That’s about the sum of it! We needed 22 of their squad to make up for the 11 of the departing ‘81 squad!

Poll: Right now, who would you rather have as Prime Minister?
