Biden calls Putin a war criminal again 16:05 - Apr 4 with 2911 views | Churchman | Biden was widely criticised for his words the other day. Just now he said: “You may remember I got criticised for calling Putin a war criminal. Well, the truth of the matter, you saw what happened in Bucha, this warrants him... He is a war criminal.” "We have to gather the information... we have to continue to provide Ukraine with the weapons they need to continue the fight, and we have to get all the detail so this can have a war crimes trial. "This guy is brutal. "What's happened in Bucha is outrageous and everyone has seen it. I think it is a war crime. "He should be held accountable." I know plenty of people will worry this language might not be diplomatic and might annoy Putin and his allies in Hungary, India, China, but from what has emerged over the last few weeks and days, he is surely right and it should be publicly said, shouldn’t it?

Biden calls Putin a war criminal again on 20:55 - Apr 4 by SuperKieranMcKenna | Indeed i took a break from social media today, just full of far right and far left shills pushing their conspiracy theories/but NATO comments/Putin enablement. I was against intervention from the start, but at this stage it seems Russia’s capacity to even start WW3 looks pretty limited. Surely his generals wouldn’t allow nuclear escalation unless Russia itself was under threat. |
If any of them give a damn about their own people they won't let it happen. But do those who might have a sway care? Putin's been very careful to surround himself with like-minded sorts I guess. Who knows what goes through their minds as individuals and if they even dare to speak to one another in private.

Unfortunately, Putin's ability to widen the war is not limited. His ground troops might be badly damaged, but he can still use missiles and strategic aviation to attack cities like Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, even Warsaw and beyond. Submarines can interdict shipping lanes. By the time NATO has enough troops (mainly American, let's be honest) in theatre to be effective, a lot of damage will have been done. The distraction will reduce help to the Ukrainians. Finally, Russia is a notoriously difficult place to attack. Vast distances and harsh weather all work against the invader. Plus getting to the gates of Moscow (how else will you force them to stop?) would entirely fulfil their conditions for use of nuclear weapons.

Biden calls Putin a war criminal again on 20:27 - Apr 4 by Nthsuffolkblue | If he is a war criminal as the weight of evidence seems to heavily suggest, on what basis should he be allowed to remain in power. It may not be common practice for Governments to call for regime change but there is every right to call for him to face charges of war crimes. He is not going to face them as Russian President, is he? He needs to face justice as soon as possible for the good of the Russian people as much as for the good of the Ukrainian people. |
I was reminded today that Milosevic ended up at The Hague. So you never know.

Twitter has been an absolute cesspit since the mass killing of civilians in Bucha hit the news. [Post edited 5 Apr 2022 9:39]

Nobody is going to invade Russia. Not in a million years. Any escalation might mean the destruction of his Air Force and his fleet, maybe even ejection from Ukraine including Crimea, but it would never go beyond that and nor should it. I doubt nuclear would be used, but only if Putin is convinced the west will retaliate. Putin only recognises strength but is a personal coward who is afraid for his own life, just like the majority of totalitarian madmen. Regardless, I think the war will end quite quickly - Ukraine has resisted magnificently, but there’s only so much battering a country can take. Russia, with a bloody nose, will settle for its eastern slice of Ukraine for now. That’s my guess, anyway.

Biden calls Putin a war criminal again on 19:43 - Apr 4 by jeera | Reports of women and even children having been raped. I was just chatting with my sister on the phone and she's saying the same lines of how engaging directly would trigger WW3. Then I asked how she'd feel if it were her little granddaughters being systematically raped and she changed her mind on the matter. |
Read Berlin by Anthony Beevor about how the Soviet army raped its way across East Prussia in 1944-45. The Ruskies have previous for this.

Not sure my head could deal with that right now tbh. Maybe another time.

The fact, so many keep tiptoeing around Putin and are scared of upsetting him, good on Biden for sticking his neck out and calling him out for exactly what he is. Let’s be fair, the majority of us think exactly the same.

It is an astonishing, thought provoking book that describes how a country can literally unravel and fall into almost limitless desperation and horror. For anyone interested, it’s a ‘must read’.
Biden calls Putin a war criminal again on 13:22 - Apr 5 with 653 views | Churchman | The BBC has just described Russia as having a ‘history of brazen denial’. It does. With the killing of Litvinenko and the Salisbury poisonings alone, the lies were brought to this country’s door. The evidence was total. There was no ‘Russia side of the story’, just lies, accusations, lies and repeat. The clever people knew what had been done, how and by who in no time at all. The problem is that with ready ears around the world, if you keep repeating the lies enough people eventually believe the words and truth becomes muddied. As a tactic, it is proven. The latest lies on Bucha will be repeated at the UN Security Council this afternoon and they will be believed by some, questioned by others and scoffed at by the majority, despite Russia’s so called evidence already being debunked. The best thing the security council could do when the Russian troll starts spewing his bilge is to walk out.

“ If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.” I think we know exactly which side are the Nazis!

I don’t agree with Howell casting doubt on the reports: how does that help? But what is clear is that war crimes need to be investigated. As much as anything to identify the actual individuals responsible because that is the nature of prosecuting war criminals. So, the key is to gather the evidence of the victims and witnesses and go from there.
