I think the point re legality is a moot one to some degree, even if I take why it's made. I think the point most are making is one about The Sun taking the moral high ground given its track record. Page 3 may not have been illegal at the time but the inclusion of girls under 18 would be now and their sexualised language used regarding girls approaching 16 is well documented.

A fair point re the BBC and abysmal way they dealt with the Newsnight situation but Savile's actions were his own rather than being condoned by the BBC in the same manner as The Sun's discourse regarding teenage girls. On a related note, The Sun was apparently aware of Savile since 1983.

I think what is not understood is how autonomous the BBC is. Many years ago I used to tip up to writing 'workshop' for a topical radio show. There would be up to fifty hopefuls and ideas would be put pitch ideas/jokes etc

The point being it was in a room away from everything else. Saviles activities were carried out away from the BBCs premises. People like him are very careful of what they do, know how to prey on vulnerable people.

Would anyone working in a bank in Ipswich know what was happening in another bank just down the road ?

The sickener is, the very people who are now frothing at the mouth with self-righteous indignation are the very same people who bleat 'woke.... baa baa' at anything that suggests the very safeguards and protections that are now put in place.

Re your last point. That doesn’t surprise me. These “newspapers” don’t publish these stories from a moral standpoint. They have dirt on numerous people in public life and sit on them until it suits their agenda, they are scum.

My point was more about people comparing the allegations against the BBC presenter and having models get their tits out on page three back in the day.

Edit. I see this story has taken another twist in the last few minutes. Someone isn’t being truthful. The parents, the Sun or the teenager. My point still stands about comparing this with page three though.

The issue of newspaper editors and journalists having information but not publishing until they can get maximum effect is a critical one. How many lives have been ruined because they were holding back ? The maxim that 'justice delayed is justice denied' should apply to all media and have legal sanctions where it is abused.
