Basically Mark Ashton has played a blinder... on 17:33 - Jul 15 by PhilTWTD
Because effectively coming back to Town is continuing his employment on the work permit he had last season rather than having to apply for a new one.
Would that cause us an issue if we came to sign him permanently at some point? (I.e. presumably his current work permit is tied to a loan contact and therefore a finite period of time in the country)

He’s falling foul of actually playing for us isn’t he? His Kosovo matches last (3) don’t help him because they’re so low in the FIFA rankings. Had his Dijon time been last season, he’d have picked up 12 of the 15 points needed, as they were in a Band 1 league when he was playing for them. Had he been in the Championship last season, that’s a Band 2 league so would have helped.
EFL 1 is a non-banded league, so no chance of points there. Kosovo too low ranked, so no chance of points there. He’s not been playing in teams that reach major competitions, so no chance of points there.
He’s got no chance of a new work permit by the looks of it. The rule changes and his last 12 months seem to have ended his time in England (unless he can stay with us as suggested).

You're better read on that than me. I had assumed it was down to his lack of international games but the division we're at does seem what's made the difference to the situation, as you say.

I’ve only had a quick look at that page, so I could well be missing something. On the face of it though he seems to have fallen foul of his circumstances last season. I don’t know how long his WP with us if for. Unless there’s a ‘continuous service’ clause (unlikely!) when that WP expires that could be it for him in England. I can’t see any of the Tory PM candidates going softer on entry requirements. His best hope is a change of government at the next GE (ha! How often does football and politics elegantly combine on here?).
I don’t understand how discussions progressed with another team - surely he or his agent or Stoke should have known this was a likely issue from the start? Odd that.

You seem to be right, I made the assumption about the international games, which was an error.
On the Stoke front, I'm guessing the assumption was that having played here last year it was assumed the existing work permit would allow him to play for anyone. It was only when Stoke investigated the situation as the deal progressed that the situation emerged. To be fair, it's a fairly new situation, he'd have qualified no problem prior to Brexit as he has a Norwegian passport.
Where things might go in the future, I don't know. Perhaps he can apply for some sort of residency having played in the UK for however many years out of the last whatever it is with us, Man City and Swansea.
Am guessing the current work permit allows him to stay in the same 'job' for as long as it lasts, so perhaps he'll stick around for a few years if the deal gets done.

I know this isn’t a politics forum (believe it or not!) but it does still sound crazy hearing that someone with a Norwegian passport can’t get a permit to work here and play football!

Yes, all very new isn’t it so maybe I was a tad harsh on them not being all over this. It’s extra interesting for me as I saw all his time down here. I’ve been watching him play fir 4 years, so it’ll be a shame to see him go off somewhere else. He can do amazing things on the pitch. His lob is one of the best individual goals I’ve seen and his goal for Swansea against Man City in the cup is one of the best team goals I’ve seen (clip below with weird graphics; brilliant goal, although I prefer Finidi’s against S’land).
Interestingly, from that link I posted, it is apparently easier now for us to sign South American players than it was pre-Brexit. We need to find ourselves another Treacle or Gio (although again they’d need to be at a high level to accrue enough points, so maybe too high a level to be attracted to us). We really need to get out of this league - can I have the ‘bleedingly obvious post of the day’ award?
