Definitely a possibility tho. Ashton spoke of in depth talks with lawyers about work permits etc. You'd imagine they'd have told him to not worry about other UK clubs.

It's possible. But I can't imagine Ashton would know without any other English clubs knowing.

Bournemouth probably shouldn't be in the PL, but they are. The divisions don't lie.

Basically Mark Ashton has played a blinder... on 13:32 - Jul 15 by STYG | It was a weird one. We were great in three of those games but I don't think we were that impressive in many of the others. Team seemed to give us way too much respect and it was that Doncaster / Accrington double header (or was it Rotherham / Accrington?) when teams realised we couldn't compete physically and we just got bullied and outplayed often from there. |
I don't really remember us playing well, other than Sunderland at home. It all went to pot when we started rotating across the pitch, including the GK. The discipline (or lack of it) once we started losing was incredible. Genuinely embarrassing.

Tranmere we thumped and we were very good second half and again against Shrewsbury we played really well for about 35-40 minutes. Bolton we were playing kids and I think it was only 1-0 at the break. But of those 11 games I remember thinking at the time we've only played well a few times and we've not got out of first gear and when we do we will blow teams away. We were on 27 points and were something like 5 clear of 3rd already and just seemed if we started to play really well we'd be out of sight. That fairly average start performances wise was the best levels we reached all season.

With all due respect to Stu, that's not the case. Stoke were very much frontrunners until the last day or so when the work permit situation emerged. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

No, as far as I'm aware Dijon situation sorted. That had been a sticking point a while back though. Am guessing that they've wanted a flat figure for him - which I think has been agreed with Town, Stoke and the Turkish clubs - and clubs then have to agree terms with the player. Stoke met what was wanted, which was why they raced to the head of the race.

Not fair to say that. If you're offered more money at Club A than Club B then anyone is going to favour Club A or ask Club B to match what Club A is offering. I think it's that sort of scenario.

Basically Mark Ashton has played a blinder... on 15:25 - Jul 15 with 1186 views | OldFart71 | The debate about whether we should be where we are rambles on. Answer = Of course we do. Largely due to poor managers and an even poorer owner in the form of M.E. But and there's a big but and I'm not talking about Carol Vorderman, if we fail this year neither will be to blame. It is of course still the managers responsibility to set the team up correctly, but ultimately it is now down to the players. We have better players than most, better owners than most and a better support than most. None of these guarantee success and as we know we will have more pressure on us to deliver than most. The expectation and no doubt we will hear the same old drivel from opposing managers saying we should be at the top and that if they get a point against us then it's a lap around Wembley Stadium for their heroes. But we must put this to one side and get on with the job in hand and everyone must pull together.

Depends imo. If you've said and want to be seen as wanting to play for club A, choosing club B because they offer more money shows what your actual interests are.

Not really. If there was 500 quid a week in it then yes sure but doubt that's the case. Like anybody he has to look after himself, so whilst he might want to come here he won't unless we're paying him what he thinks he's worth, and basically what he can get elsewhere.

I remember the hand holding team fist pump at Gillingham. Cringed watching it. Showed utter arrogance and nil respect for other clubs. Then we went to Accrington and they just got in our faces and bullied us. Every team thereafter did just that

That's promising it's in our hands to do then rather than being in a complex battle with Dijon . Let's hope Turkish teams are not outbidding us. Am sure player wants this sorted now to get ready for a season here or in Turkey!

Do you think that then essentially rules us out? I can’t imagine Mark Ashton going back to Celina with a counter offer, especially now he knows Celina can’t sign for another club in the UK. I imagine the offer is still open for Celina to accept, but can see Ashton sticking to his guns.

I reckon the OP is right. Ashton would’ve known this, went in low with the offer, let santi explore his options, knowing full well ipswich we’re the only English club he could sign for. Let’s just hope turkey isn’t appealing to him.

Because effectively coming back to Town is continuing his employment on the work permit he had last season rather than having to apply for a new one.
