Who was the first player we ever signed from a non-British or Irish club? 23:12 - Aug 17 with 1383 viewsKesgrave_Exile

I was perusing the Ipswich v Coventry City league programme from the 1977/78 season and in the programme it mentioned that on July 27th 1936 we signed Scottish right back Bob Thomson from Racing Club de Paris (86 years ago) when we were in the Southern League.

Surely he was the first?

I’m intrigued now. If correct, how exactly did a Scotsman transfer to a French team in the 1930s? And we weren’t even professional until 1938. Many questions.

Turned professional in 1936 (joined the Southern League) and then were elected to the Football League in ‘38.

It wasn’t easy signing players from foreign clubs back then as in an early Brexit moment in 1931 the FA introduced a two year residency requirement to stop foreign footballers taking our jobs.

Adolf Hitler found a way round this which allowed Bert Trautman to play league football….

Yeah, I think his Grandson was on the coaching staff around that period so he should have the inside track.

We had already recruited a coach from abroad by that time.
