There is a difference between favourite and best and both are hard to call. Obviously best for most might include players before their time. Favourite - might not be the best or even have played that many games.

At eight years old my favourite was John O’Rourke. Tousled black hair, scored every week. He was gone in no time much to my dismay. Another early favourite was Derek Jefferson. Old Chopper seemed to clobber man or ball or both. Agricultural covers it. How was I to know he was virtually blind? Then came Jimmy Robertson. My favourite of that early 70s period.

None will make my best 11 which begins with your choices. To them, I’ll add Richard Wright, Taricco, Paul Mariner and Clive Woods. What a team.

Certainly, although I only include players that I saw play for ITFC when considering by 'Best Ever' and only include performances that I saw for ITFC and nothing that they might have done before or after.

Two that would get in my 'Favourites' team would be Dougie Moran and Danny Hegan who were my favourite ITFC players at their particular time. The Beat, of course, would get in any ITFC team of mine whatever the criteria.

Maybe we should have a "team of favourite players" thread on here. I'm not established enough to start one and think that anyone would ever take any notice.

I have never attempted to select my 'Favourite' ITFC XI I have enough trouble deciding on a 'Best Ever'.

When it comes to 'Best Ever' there are seven nailed on to be in it but the other four places I can never settle on, perhaps one day.

The seven certainties are Mills, Hunter, Beattie, Thijssen, Wark, Muhren and Crawford.

Surely Burley at right back as well?

He usually is, depends on whether I have Mick Mills at RB or LB.

If Mills is RB I then have to maybe play The Beat at LB and Butcher next to Hunter.

Nah. Play Beattie next to Hunter in the middle. Butcher on the bench as one of the five subs (sorry TB). Always play people in their best positions. The odd one out is Mills who could play equally well either side.

My Favourites
GK - Wright: Thought he was the best keeper in the world when I was a kid. Thought he would go on to be England's established number one for decades.
RB - Wilnis: Where to start? He hates Norwich, clearly... You don't get a song like that without being a fan favourite. My favourite town defender.
LB - Taricco: see Phil's explainer.
CB - Mings: with all the dodgy characters we've had over the past two decades, this guy just stood out as antithetical to all of that. Turned out to be a cracking footballer and my wife and I were cheering him on as "Our boy Mings" at the Euros.
CB - Thetis: This guy had legendary status in our household. My cousin informed my Grandad that he would be best suited to wrestling crocodiles. Not sure a kid can give a finer compliment to a CB. Walks back to my Grandparents after the game were often spent discussing how he managed to stay on the pitch. Not a player for the VAR landscape.
RM - Dyer: See Phil's explainer.
LM - Ambrose: That Sheff Utd game where Pablo punched their player in the face, we went 2-0 down, and somehow outplayed them to win 3-2. He didn't want to leave. What could have been.
CM - Genchev: Although I was young enough to experience our relegation in the 90s and a few preceding seasons, I wasn't young enough for these players to become my favourites. With Genchev being a clear outlayer. The song, following him and Bulgaria to fourth in the 1994 World Cup. Too young to remember where he played along the midfield, so centre it is.
CM - Reuser: I originally had Magilton. Definitely a heart over head pick. But such an exciting placer to watch.
S - Darren Bent: How did we not get promoted with this guy up front? Went on to play 13 games and score 4 goals for England. Quality, local player. Felt like a very typical Ipswich talent at the time.
S - Stewart: The goals, the gloves, the noise. After years of being mocked by Man Utd, Spurs, and other glory supporters in Cambridgeshire, Stewart was the player who was the symbol of our most successful Burley season.

Subs
GK: Walton
D: Bramble
M: Magilton
S: Johnson
