'There are some things money can't buy

Football managers isn't one of them!'

Ha! The original still makes no sense to me unless I’m missing something really obvious. Did anyone on here ever claim it it as their banner and/or explain what point they were trying to make?

Watson covered it pretty well some years ago:

It made sense, but was clunky and embarrassing. It was an odd pop at Brighton for daring to have a massive financial institution as their sponsor (and saviour). I think the perps were just rather ignorant.

Then just get Neil Wood down from Salford who will be doing the same there, playing basically exactly the same style football as us

Someone needs to get Neil Critchley out of Villa. Heard some amazing things about his methods, did a great job at Blackpool and also has that pedigree through Liverpool. Don't really get why he wants to be Gerrard's number 2.

As I see it, Kieran might regard the likes Brighton as clubs which we might pass going down as we go up.

You might argue Potter was a bit of a punt for them. He obviously had more management experience, but the lions share of it was in Sweden and he had only been at Swansea for <1 year when Brighton poached him. KM is of course relatively unique in that while he doesn't have loads of #1 experience yet, he has a vast coaching CV owing to his circumstances, unlike most who retire at 30 odd and go into it. He's also operated at big clubs, which makes him, for me, more qualified to make that step than someone like a Bonner or Schumacher at this moment in time. Not that they're likely to be considered either, but just in terms of other L1 managers doing well who simply don't have that pedigree.

I do agree with you though, he won't go to Brighton on this occasion. I think the fact he's being linked, or perhaps 'spoken about' is a better way of putting it says a lot though, he's highly thought of for sure. What insulates us slightly is you would think he probably needs to demonstrate a promotion here before he's seriously considered a PL level, but by the time he's done, by definition we're in the Championship and we're on a stronger footing to keep him. If we stay in L1 it'll be harder to keep him happy, but equally he won't have got us up and that in itself will probably rule him out of anything too juicy anyway. As it stands right now I reckon there's a handful of clubs I would be worried about and they're largely to big but underperforming Championship clubs. If a Cardiff or Birmingham came sniffing etc.

Potter had European experience as well, of course, and I agree KMc has a lot of coaching experience, however, as the head man with the buck stopping with him, he's only been in the job for nine months and relatively out of the spotlight in League One. Think the stories which have appeared have just been clickbait. I don't think anyone really believes he's in the running for the job.

Think it's just a 3 tier system now in clubs:

1 - Absolute giants plus a few others like Villa, Newcastle

2 - Big clubs that run a Cat 1 or Cat 2 academy of a decent size

3 - Everyone else, that really have the infrastructure of a club in the 80s

Think any senior job jumping from tier one to tier 3 will always be worthwhile

True, that could happen.

But at present McKenna and ITFC are about 3 or 4 years away minimum from where Brighton are today.

And if McKenna is that successful on this sort of timeline he’ll probably not last more than a couple of years with us before an even bigger club comes knocking.

Unfortunately, it’s the “downside” of success so better for us that he does get more of these kind of club links than not. It’ll show that he and ITFC are moving in the right direction. And I think if we’re hanging onto the idea of another Burley and a more long-term tenure then A) that was a different time and the opportunities to really step up weren’t there to the same extent and B) that was mostly based on GB and the team repeatedly “failing” in the primary aim of promotion.

The dream of course is that he digs a little deeper into the club’s past and can appreciate much more of what Robson achieved over a longer period. And for some reason decides that’s the approach for him until, like BR, he feels he’s taken us as far as he can. So all he’ll have to do is win the Champions League and then he can head off to Barcelona, Bayern or Man U with my blessing and my gratitude.

Reading The Athletic piece of their managerial hunt he wasn't on their shortlist - Steve Cooper, Kjetil Knutsen, Russell Martin, Nathan Jones & Roberto De Zerbi were the names if I recall correctly.

I don't think on the face of it KMc has done enough to make that leap yet, despite the fact we know what progress he has made, and how well he is developing this side, and how important he is in the building of this club.

The quotes in this article, that are attributed to McK, are his answers at the Fans forum Monday 5th September.
Brighton started looking for a new manager on 9th September.

If McK still holds those views today then it shows his mind is made up for this season at least.

I do take offense that the sports media seem to think McK is a cheap date.
He wants the limo, 24 red roses and the chairman on one knee for him to say yes.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Quite.

And at his age it's not like he's in a some rush for a final pay day.

He's just starting out.

Plenty of time to build his CV with us and one day when someone comes knocking it'll be one of the big boys.

Although of course by then we'll be busy designing his statue as we'll be enjoying some heady days again of our own.

I don't think he's in the running either to be Brighton manager.

When was the last time we had other clubs interested in our manager!

Brighton are, sadly, light years ahead of us currently - will take a decade of getting things right to catch them

Mick was approached plenty of times when he was here. Lambert was approached by Sunderland towards the end of the calendar year in our first season in L1.
