We've effectively been in 'winter bed crisis' mode at [redacted] hospital since June. Fook only knows what January will be like.

Surely the wealthy politicians and 150k+ crowd have friends and family that aren’t in that bracket and will suffer? Maybe they are just in a privaledged bubble. I mean I have private healthcare and a good salary, but I wouldn’t want the NHS and other public services destroyed because many of my family and friends are not in that position. Doesn’t make sense to me.

Privileged bubbles I expect, based on the limited amount of time I've spent with MPs. I don't see why that means you can't have compassion for those less well off than yourself, but there we are.

There will be a lot of workers currently just below the 40% tax threshold who will find that a reasonable pay rise will lead to some of their earnings being taxed at the higher rate. Would have been far better if they had raised the tax free earnings level to £14,000 and the higher tax figure to £45,000. Would certainly have pi$$ed off fewer potential Tory voters.

On that note, weird to see Andy Burnham arguing against the 1% off basic rate.

Andy Burnham is right, instead of cutting the tax rate the tax free allowance should be increased. Reintroducing the 10% Tax rate for the first £5,000 of taxable income would also be better than a 1% reduction.
