Gretna have played in both English and Scottish leagues but not what would be termed the English Football League (always non-league). Also, wouldn't describe Gretna as obscure. Not sure what the actual answer is. Carlisle would have been my guess but for the "obscure" clue. I don't think any Scottish (nor Icelandic for that matter) clubs have ever been in the English Football League. |  |

Having checked a Wiki list of former football league clubs I would guess it might be Ashington. Never heard of them as a place or a club previously. | |

Newcastle upon Tyne is 0.09 degrees north of Carlisle I am afraid. I have also discounted Hexham, Hawick and Corbridge now. | |
