Things to do while not watching the World Cup. on 09:07 - Nov 22 by thebooks | I loved it, although the plot falls apart a bit and some of the narration grates. It's the finest looking programme I've seen for ages, capturing the Western light, skies and colours perfectly. Soundtrack's spot on too. Some of the performances are brilliant: Toby Jones pops up early on for just one episode. |
Agree with all that, especially about the soundtrack. Brilliant. As other have said the plot does take some getting your head round in places. usually makes sense part way through the next episode. (I've just watched the one in London, which pulls a lot of it together)

Thanks to you and the others for the tip. Looking forward to giving it a go.

Things to do while not watching the World Cup. on 13:04 - Nov 22 by Darth_Koont | “The premise of the sho was to highlight instances of racism towards Jews that is overlooked when applied to other minorities.” I don’t deny that antisemitism crops up in a particular and often very different way. But that’s a bit of a spurious claim when other minorities are still treated worse in many instances and we’re seeing an actual hierarchy of racism demonstrated the other way. Do you think anyone who called British Jews “a nation within a nation” would get a plum job on national telly and welcomed into the Labour Party? Or that our media would pretty much say nothing about it? But apparently, it’s perfectly OK to say it about British Muslims. All racism and “othering” of people is bad. But we’ve definitely allowed a dodgy, extreme and weaponised battleground over antisemitism to emerge while simultaneously ignoring/apologising for even worse stuff. |
It's most unlike you to launch a preemptive strike against a tv documentary about prejudice against Jewish people, without having actually watched it. Oh. https://www.twtd.co.uk/forum/461329/page:1# [Post edited 22 Nov 2022 14:00]

It’s most unlike you to deflect and keep pushing a narrative when I’ve countered it with reality. Similarly, I was right to be sceptical of the dodgy and “wholly misleading” Panorama documentary because I was paying attention to what was actually going on. Not listening to stories. It was actually appreciated to hear David Baddiel apologise recently for his racist 'comedy' bits aimed at Jason Lee. It's perhaps something others might do well to reflect upon and apologise for - a previous embrace of people and personalities with less than stellar anti-discrimination policies and attitudes that caused actual hurt and harm to people. You’ve completely changed you post. Before the edit it was garbled nonsense. The sort of thing that the poster know as Aaron Spelling would have been all over 😉

No, I missed one word. Then when I put that word in, I also decided to add another para. This is all part of your usual MO to deflect and swerve anything I say in response. If you want to go back up the thread to address what I have written then that would be great. But it would also be a first. [Post edited 22 Nov 2022 15:45]

I think that’s fair. I was an active member of the Conservative party and member of a local authority when they introduced Clause 28. It was homophobic and discriminatory legislation, and I never objected to its introduction or spoke out against it. Not that the voice of a local councillor would have made much difference. I’m quite happy to apologise for staying silent and “embracing” the people responsible for its introduction. As somebody with a gay teenage daughter, I am grateful to the much needed student support for LGTBQ pupils. To force these groups to stop was appalling and I wish I had been more aware at the time. Good post GB. I've mentioned before about how moving to a more diverse place has made me reflect on some of my own unconscious biases. It's not something to be defensive about, it doesn't make you a bad person, a lot of it is to do with the culture within which you are brought up. But it is the responsible thing to do to carry out a bit of a self-audit of your beliefs every now and then.
