Many on here have commented on how the facade of control in China is very brittle. Amazing to theorise that the world cup is helping to draw attention to the bizarre COVID rules that remain in China to this day. Clearly a nation totally exhausted from autocratic rule.
I suspect this is the beginning of a something very important.

It is a massive country and ultimately rule of law depends on the support of sufficient of the populace.

Some elements of that article imply the police's support is not as absolute as it appears. Again the facade of order and control is brittle.
200,000 people have fled HK. For what it's worth, that 2 part documentary by the BBC focusing on the Polytechnic University siege in November 2019 is incredibly harrowing viewing. Highly recommended. [Post edited 27 Nov 2022 18:52]

Watched that the other day. Brutal. Fair play to the students for fighting back, but with hindsight, perhaps blockading yourself in the University wasn't the best idea. |  |
