David Baddiel has finally apologised for his racism to Jason Lee ... 00:27 - Nov 28 with 16796 viewsXYZ

... after 25 years. Just when his program about racism (Jews don't count) was coming out.

Coincidental?

Clean hands and all that.

It seems to me that there is baiting on both sides on matters relating to antisemitism in the Labour Party, with a recent post about John Ware being an example. As a member of the Labour Party, I have strong views on the issue myself, but surely it's been done to death and we all need to move on.

I concur entirely.

….and frankly embarrassing.

This thread has brought up some very valid and important points that are totally worthy of discussion, but it’s become increasingly apparent that you simply intended it as bait for another poster.

You, and a couple of others, are diminishing the real issue here by making it about your own personal vendetta against another poster.

For your own benefit, and remaining sanity, you should probably stop this “crusade”.

Have a good day.

I look forward to seeing you call out GB's vendetta.

Until then you just look like the errand boy.

David Baddiel has finally apologised for his racism to Jason Lee ... on 18:05 - Nov 30 by MattinLondon

I’m not sure whether I’m about to go around in circles or going completely off-topic but here goes.

I’m not really fussed whether DB apology was only brought about due to his TV programme. Sometimes it’s only when you examine your own past actions in detail or as part of some sort of wider context do you realise the consequences of those actions and that only a face-to-face apology is the correct thing to do. Despite the cynicism surrounding his apology it still took guts to say sorry in person especially to Jason Lee who still clearly and rightly felt anger towards him. You can argue quite rightly that it’s long overdue but the fact that he has apologised is significant.

As a mixed-race kid growing up in Ipswich in hindsight, the mid-80s and early 90s society was a lot more racist than what it is now. I remember quite clearly my mum and I being followed by security guards in shops - blatantly looking at us whilst others (I mean white people) were ignored by them. I remember being racially abused by blokes in cars and I remember a particular bus conductor asking me whether I paid for my ticket whilst he ignored my white friends.

And in that era racism was seen as a form of banter. Actually not just racism but misogyny and homophobia as well. One of my high school teachers often told gay jokes openly in the classroom, something she thought was funny.

Whilst open racism is no longer viewed as acceptable it happens frequently - Euro 2020 being the prime example of this within a footballing context. For a wider example the recent firebombing of a detention centre in Dover. The offender was white and so the narrative was that he was a lone wolf with mental health issues - that story disappeared from the headlines very quickly and on TWTD there was only the odd thread about it. Now if he happened to be black or Muslim (or even worse both) the narrative would be that the Muslim or black community have to do a lot more work to target extremists and that they have to take some responsibility for the attack.

I have two young kids who are mixed race as well but who look white and I’m ashamed to say that I’m glad that they do as they probably will never hear racist insults directed at them.

In short, DB apology might well be late and might well have been as a result of his show but it was heartfelt and he realises the full error of what he subjected JL to. We can’t do anything to alter the past or past attitudes we can try to atone for past actions. And an apology works wonders.

Apologies for going on and on and for more sideways passes than Skuse.

Really great post.

On a similar theme, about twenty years ago, I knew someone who was a trainee solicitor at the Treasury and is now a published author. He was black and had been stopped in his car by the police something like twenty times. In contrast, I (a white Whitehall lawyer) had only ever been stopped once by the police in London when I strayed into a bus lane.

It's also a sad reflection of things these days that you are slightly relieved that your kids look white, although I tend to think that London is a much more tolerant place than much of the rest of the country when it comes to issues of race.

Thank you - it’s far easier for me to talk about racism remotely via this great site (thanks Phil, Gav and Mark) than for me to talk about it in real life.

I don’t think it’s all doom-and-gloom in terms of race. Years ago my best mate mentioned that he wouldn’t care less what people said to him [if he was a professional footballer] as he would be earning a lot of money and playing football for a living. Then, that kind of thought and comment was commonly held. Now, amongst the mainstream population that view isn’t considered acceptable. Not just race but mental health - remember when Stan Collymore was ridiculed for saying he was depressed? He’s too wealthy to suffer from depression. Also derogatory comments towards women - get your tits out for the lads etc - seem to be no longer considered as banter anymore.

No doubt the tell-it-like-it-is won’t like it but there you go. Change happens slowly and hopefully racism and misogyny and homophobia and transphobia etc will be eradicated more or less soon. As much as I dislike him, we do have an Asian PM something that probably wouldn’t have happened twenty odd years ago.

Thanks. London is such a vastly populated city that it does incorporate more races than any other city in the UK. But it seems that the racists or xenophobes are a lot louder than some other parts of the country. The only way to carry on with such views is too say them louder in the hope that they believe in it more - not sure whether this makes sense.

I am ashamed that I’m happy that my kids are white but we are who we are by past experiences. And who wants their children to suffer such experiences.

Change will happen however slowly.

That's interesting what you say about London. And of course, my experience of living in London for around 20 years in the 80s and 90s was that of a white person.

And don't be ashamed, it is those that are racist who ought to be ashamed for making you feel the way you do.

45 minutes in.

Jason Lee is one top bloke. Wow.

The other bloke? As Jason says; maybe it's the messenger.

Still, some people support these people guilty of egregious racism.

Edit:

The point being that the fight against anti-semiticism is harmed by a self-confessed (and supposedly reformed) racist making the case.

On the basis of this interview David Baddiel will be remembered as the racist that tried, but failed, to destroy Jason Lee.

I hope he learns more about redemption than he's shown in the first 40 minutes - Lee set him up with the opportunity and he failed spectacularly.

Let's see how the final 15 minutes go.

Got around to watching this through to the finish.

Jason Lee is a true legend.

I'd be interested to hear the views of those holding Baddiel up as of similar standing.

The evidence suggests that he's in the game for self-publicity, as Jason Lee skillfully demonstrated.

A conversation with my daughter yesterday fully justifies your attitude in relation to your kids.

She is training to be a primary school teacher, and shares a flat with a black girl.

Last year the girl did a school placement in an all-white school, and experienced racism from the kids, coupled with a white teacher who did nothing to stop it.

The experience has put her off teaching completely, although she still intends to complete her degree.

What a very sad indictment of this country, particularly as it happened in a place (Brighton) which is supposed to be tolerant, at least so far as concerns gay people.
