Wales National Team to changeit's name to Cymry 18:38 - Nov 29 with 3940 viewsMercian

I have no problem with that whatsoever but a Welsh FA official stated that it was because the team had a stronger Welsh identity than ever before with over half the squad born and raised in England. Ethan Ampadu was born in Exeter to an English mother and an Irish father of Nigerian descent and yet he plays for Wales.

I guess a country can call itself what it likes. But having said that, Wales has two official languages, one of which is English, and one of which is Welsh, and only about 30% of the population can speak the latter.

Presumably someone thinks it's a better representation of the country to refer to it in a language that only a minority speaks, when the entire population speaks English. I have my doubts as to whether that is the case...

Welsh is the endemic, traditional language. It seems entirely reasonable to use it for proper nouns.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but after "committing" himself to Scotland, wasn't DJ found to be ineligible? I'm sure I remember seeing an interview with the then Scotland manager Craig Brown about it.

Yes, because his mother was born in the UK, Birmingham if I remember rightly. The rule is (or perhaps was, not sure) that a player with a British passport who wasn't born in the UK could qualify for any of the home nations but only if their parents also weren't born in the UK.

The below from a story when Northern Ireland tried to revive the interest when he was at Forest:

It transpired that under a 1993 agreement between FIFA and the UK football associations, four criteria for a player's qualification for a national team have to be met.

This agreement stated: "Where the player, both natural parents, and both natural grandparents are born outside the UK, but the player is the holder of a current British passport, he may play for the country of his choice."

With Johnson's mother coming from England it appeared he was not in fact able to choose his nation.

There were suggestions some while after the furore that one or other associations may choose to ignore the agreement but until now there has been no suggestion that the Forest striker may resume his colourful international career.

Johnson Irish Again? 10th Jun 2003 15:21
Former Town striker David Johnson is once again being targeted by the Northern Ireland international side. Back in 1999 Johnson was approached by the Ulstermen and subsequently almost played for Wales and then Scotland. 0

Wales will be known as Wales, Snowdonia will be known as Snowdonia. The majority of the Welsh can't speak Welsh very well at all.

They need to make their road markings more inclusive, Just telling that bloke Araf to slow down isn't going to spread the word to others.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

I'm not sure what the consequences of this really are, does anyone know? I mean, Germany is known as Deutschland in German, but English speakers still call it Germany, so surely we (as in English speakers) will still just call it Wales, right? Puzzled.
