Oriental on 13:23 - Dec 20 by jaykay | if they are to the west , is that where that dreadful shorten word for western oriental gentleman comes from ? |
Rather like the Major in Fawlty Towers. In his anecdote, the Major tells Basil Fawlty that he went to the Test with a woman who "kept referring to the Indians as n1ggers. 'No, no, no,' I said, 'the n1ggers are the West Indians. These people are wogs.'" Not everyone got that it was actually the Major & his type who were being lampooned, in the same way as Johnny Speight was using Alf Garnett to poke fun at his racist, bigoted views.

But yes this is broadly correct. Living in Vietnam you see plenty of places with Orient in the name, but most people I know wouldn't be pleased with me calling them Oriental. Especially considering the region's history with colonialism. [Post edited 20 Dec 2022 16:58]

Oriental on 20:28 - Dec 20 with 996 views | Whos_blue | Oriental as a descriptor started to be replaced by South East Asian over a decade ago. It's a fairly easy change to make. Some words and phrases just become dated. You just have to want to make the effort to adopt the change.

Not sure why bluebudgie's downarrowed this. Not a fan of facts? Or a fan of being racist?
