Why is man of the match not allowed anymore? 08:19 - Jan 9 with 13677 views | SitfcB | If it’s a mens football match surely ‘man of the match’ is fine. In women’s football you can have woman of the match, although they always use to say man of the match as well at lower level, and shout nuts!! It’s now ‘player of the match’ or has been for a little while now. Clive Tyldesley said man of the match yesterday but then corrected himself to player of the match, which made me think, that’s all. Yes, it's been trademarked for a long time, I think the issue arose when the owner sold it in 2012ish, and the new owners started enforcing it. Although I believe you can still use it as an expression/award after a match but TV companies moved away from the expression partly because of the enforcement. [Post edited 9 Jan 2023 8:33]

Ha bloody hell, didn’t realise that, I’m sure they’ve used the phrase since then but perhaps they didn’t want to pay for the rights anymore. How ridiculous.

Wow. Even more wow that there are companies out the just trademarking catchphrases that are already in common use.

I'm afraid you're going to be hearing from my solicitors with a water tight contract to sign, as I own the rights to the phrase "Even more wow", so your using of it just now comes at a price. Thank you for your support. Invoice to follow.

It's nuts isn't it. I don't understand how anyone can claim ownership of phrases that are in common use. Makes me wonder if I can make money out of this somehow. Perhaps I'll trademark GOAL! and charge any of you lot who use it on here. (If it hasn't been already)

I’ll register “Today’s team” I think - I’ll make a killing off Sitters alone!

It is very difficult to understand how such an expression could ever be trademarked given its common and presumably worldwide use (including in everyday speech) for as long as I can remember. It looks like the Premier League still use the phrase, but presumably they pay for the privilege. https://www.premierleague.com/man-of-the-match Incidentally, Player of the Match also appears to be trademarked. https://www.trademarkelite.com/uk/trademark/trademark-detail/UK00003641699/PLAYE What a crazy world we live in, where everything has a price. I could kind of see the point where the registering organisation had some reasonable claim, the FA for instance might be able to argue that the phrase 'man of the match' was coined by them, HM Government could definitey argue that 'keep calm and carry on' is theirs or Frankie Goes To Hollywood's representatives could reasonably say if anyone is going to make money from 'Frankie says...' it should be us. But random organisations taking ownership of phrases just by registering them makes no sense.

Looks to also be the same people that originally trademarked man of the match all those years ago. I'll imagine they'll go and sell it again after a few years and then what? Performer of the match? Sportsperson of the match?

I think the issue is the trademark was assigned (amongst many) against the broadcast of TV and Radio. That technically means if you created a show and called it Man of the Match you would have to pay a fee to the trademark owner, but it doesn't cover the use of that that expression so TV could still award it and use the expression. But to be 100% sure they aren't breaking the trademark they have decided to play safe, although not sure why they decided that.
