Cobbold Stand redevelopment 17:24 - Jan 29 with 7729 viewsdominiciawful

When the Cobbold Stand is eventually rebuilt, how much could that add onto the capacity of Portman Road?

Also, does anybody know if they will install “safe standing” at PR at any point?

We've not got a great record of success when building new stands. The Cobbold perhaps being the exception.

It's iconic with the lettering. I like the way our 4 stands are slightly disjointed as opposed to a perfectly fitting 'bowl'.

Even redeveloped, it will never be a bowl type ground, it's designed to be boxy, I believe there were plans to put a 4th building in that corner with extra away facilities, however Ashton has good experience with stadia

He may have other ideas, he mentioned the ground faces away from the Town as an example which is unusual so he may have bolder ideas for what can be done with that stand

Obviously the road is a probably with expansion, unless you build over it and road continues to go underneath.

The road is closed off most of the time now so that maybe less of an issue than it once was though has potential security risks attached to it.

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Not sure capacity is the issue. Say it adds 5,000 at a cost of several million - that is not really too sensible when you are in hock to a pension fund and on a timeline.

However - plenty of scope to ‘enhance the match day experience’ and more sensible exec boxes IF there is a demand for such tosh.

The upper tier will be extended and in doing so hang over the now redundant Portman Road - which is all part of a bigger plan that IBC has to redevelop the area in general.

Of course it's an issue, Budgie.

5,000 extra seats at £30 a pop is £150k per game.

It would pay for itself in a couple of seasons....

Point 4 shows the age of the stand for sure... back in the 70's you could get served your bevvies and go back to your seat and drink on view of the pitch. It was also a huge development when compared to the existing other stands at the time. I suppose most of the available space is taken up by " hospitality ".... what any new development on that side of the pitch really needs is a pre match bar Open to all, I do remember the days when any season ticket holder could use the centre spot and it was great!

There are of course many designs available. Although not favoured in England, it could be a steeper two tier design is considered, of which there are numerous in Italy, the US and Spain. See: Valencia.

If they rebuild the Cobbold and make the capacity increase by say 5000 to what it is now I can see that being a home only stand and away fans given the Churchmans lower.

Whatever they has to be an improvement

I was in A block Saturday and the queues / crush getting a drink / having a pee were just ridiculous and somewhat dangerous

Shane they can’t knock the NS into one “kop end” type of stand
