Does anybody actually want to stop corruption? 08:52 - Jan 29 with 1585 views | NthQldITFC | Time after time we get media stories of corrupt politicians taking bungs or 'loans' for favours or honours. We get stories of corporations promising one thing and doing another; directly cheating at emissions tests, or promising to build community things alongside their money-making little boxes and never doing it. And we get stories of individuals avoiding their social responsibilities in their tax affairs or environmental footprints. Nothing meaningful ever happens as a consequence, so nothing ever changes. Are we just a fundamentally dishonest, selfish and (given the increasing multiplier of our technological progress) inevitably suicidal species?

However The emissions cheating has been met with fines in the hundreds of millions, but probably in USA and Europe, not sure what, if anything, UK has done. Hence the class action adverts from lawyers. There does seem to be a "rules are for little people" attitude amongst the ruling "elite" and the most likely replacements are unlikely to change much for fear of upsetting the applecart.

Does anybody actually want to stop corruption? on 11:27 - Jan 29 with 1452 views | Darth_Koont | Not really. Our media and political class don’t want people to be caught and will punish them for that. But the whole establishment edifice is built around consolidating power, influence and money – and loyal servants of that status quo getting their cut. It’s a Ponzi scheme ultimately that serves people towards the top but is rinsing the millions of people below. We have increased the wealth at the top at a time when the rest are largely getting poorer and the relative outlook for younger generations has never been as bad as this since the Second World War. Any status quo that justifies that for itself and the country it pretends to represent (4 million children were already living in poverty before Brexit, Covid, Ukraine or any other excuse came in) is morally corrupt if nothing else. Edit: Companies, even as profit-driven as they are, tend to be better. There is a market where brands like VW will pay some consequences for their actions. The ironically protectionist closed shop of neoliberal politics suffers no consequences at all. Even the disillusionment and disenfranchisement of the 2000s has been co-opted as right-wing populism to keep change and more socially, economically and environmentally beneficial politics off the agenda. Does anybody actually want to stop corruption? on 13:40 - Jan 29 with 1406 views | DJR | On the political front, I think the problem is the increasing blurring of the lines between the public and private sectors, as well as many very wealthy MPs with no real understanding of the public service ethos . I joined the civil service in 1987 and the public sector ethos included the fact that one didn't gain financially from one's position. Indeed, we even had to supply our own tea and coffee for the hot water tea urns provided. In those days, politicians (with perhaps the odd exception) also abided by this ethos. But sadly this is no longer the case.

In 1945 voters recognised that things could and needed to be better. Even then when the country was almost bankrupt policies were put in place that saw houndreds of thousands of council houses built each year. The NHS was created. Whereas now we have billions wasted on paying for damp and unfit housing for thousands. Similarly there are billions being leeched out to line the pockets of private care home owners - oftten with them providing the most basic of care. Public assets that should be used for the benefit of all are being stripped out and used for te beenfit of a few. And the cap doffers supoort this in the believe that the bigger the cake that goes to the top table, the more crumbs that nmightfall to them, with brexit being the classic example We'll get richer as the requirement to meet higher standards will be removed and yu will get, err...................cheaper food, better paid jobs and no VAT on energy bills. Someone once likened it to a Dick Turpin economy. the more he robbed the more he could give back, the bits that were relatively worthless. Until voters get of their knees their will not be change.

Where journalists appear on that list is one of the worst bits. The people whose job it is to tell the public the truth are one of the least trusted group of professionals. The damage the majority of the press has done to this country by deliberately misleading people to get them to vote in a way that they want is immense. [Post edited 29 Jan 2023 18:30]
