The BBC love Harry Kane 23:07 - Feb 5 with 2082 viewsMattinLondon

Yes, it’s an impressive goal scoring record and I’m sure if I supported Spurs then I’ll be amazed, but the BBC and some other media have gone a tad over-the-top. If he had broken the PL record then I’ll understand…but it’s Spurs…so what.

Nothing wrong, surely, with celebrating a magnificent achievement?

Just another example of metropolitan based journalists thinking that the rest of the country are in complete agreement with them.

Don't be silly, he's just broken a club record set by an absolute all time great of the game and is well on his way to breaking Shearer's Premier record. He deserves the accolades.

It would be nice if Spurs had counted Jimmy Greaves’ goals properly.

Harry Kane still doesn't have Jimmy Greaves' record by Miaow 5 Feb 2023 17:31
Greaves scored two goals against us in the 1962 Charity Shield which, for some reason, Spurs do not include within his official tally.

I don't understand it seeing as the Charity/Community Shield is a competitive fixture - if Tottenham played in one and Kane was to score, that would be counted.

It ultimately doesn't matter as Kane will have the record either way, but it irks the pedant in me.

Throughout his professional career...

284 goals in 471 games
200 goals in 301 games for Spurs
53 goals in 80 games for England
17 goals in 22 games this season (The only reason it's not picked up on so much is because of some phenomenon called Erling Haaland)

He's going to become the highest scoring English international of all time and he'll probably break Shearers PL record within the next 3 to 4 seasons.

All this playing for a Spurs team who have never won anything in his time there. And he's not even 30 yet.

I will never understand how a guy with such an outstanding record can get so much hate from modern day fans who essentially spend most of their time looking at stats rather than watching the player. See also Rooney...

In your example hate is perhaps a strong word. Guess it's mainly my experience of sitting through previous Euro's and World Cups and seeing people getting on his back because he "didn't score in the group stages, only scored against Iran/Panama, never shows up for the big games."

Either way, downplaying his achievements is just... odd...

I didn’t. I said that his achievement was impressive- I just don’t understand why a club record received so many column inches or discussion points on National telly.

simply because it happens so rarely (see the BBC article, half the teams records halve stood for near 50 years or more), and perhaps because Jimmy Greaves was such a great, to surpass him it really needed to take a special player.

Likely to happen less and less going forward also as players no longer stay at a club for more than a few seasons, difficult to see our Ray's record ever being surpassed.

The Charity Shield has always been classified as a friendly, not a competitive fixture.

There was an Athletic article about this the other day, and basically says what you conlude - ie. bar a miracle will only happen at a big club these days unless you are MK or Wigan who have a really low record because players move up if doing well and the club can't keep up with them.

Ian Henderson has recently done it for Rochdale in a further spell at the club after previously falling short - and more randomly the guy who is in second place for Oxford should be winning because he scored a hat trick against a team that was wiped from the records when that team went bust in Conference (maybe Hereford?) and their results were expunged from the records for that season!
